Avec Idomeneo, Mozart nous transporte en Crète au lendemain de la guerre de Troie, et c’est au Grec Yannis Kokkos (souvenons-nous des merveilleuses productions de Pelléas et Mélisande ou des Rois) qu’il revient de peindre le décor de l’intrigue. Première grande réussite publique du génial musicien, l’œuvre bouscule les canons de l’opera seria pour atteindre une intensité dramatique que le compositeur redéploiera dans ses ouvrages futurs.
