A rich count who disguises himself as a poor student in order to woo his beautiful mistress, an odd old man who has her under his wing and intends to marry himself, and in between a busy barber who skilfully spins the intrigues of the count and those of the Alten counters: Rossini's opera buffa is a comedy classic that is capable of arousing enthusiasm in every opera-goer. Laurent Pelly's productions have been in the repertoire of international opera houses for years - after the premiere in Paris in 2017, Il barbiere di Siviglia can now also be experienced in Klagenfurt! The premiere of the opera, which is so popular today, turned into a fiasco in 1816 due to a number of mishaps: the strings of the guitar with which the Count was supposed to accompany his love song broke, a singer got stuck on a lath, fell and earned malicious applause for it, and in the finale A cat is even said to have appeared on stage, causing the audience to meow. But from the second performance onwards, the triumph of the "Barbiere" could no longer be stopped. To this day, the work captivates with orchestral brilliance, vocal virtuosity and of course sparkling wit.
