When Il barbiere di Siviglia was premiered in 1816,the Roman carnival was about to reach its peak. The opera was made for this unleashed atmosphere: with its delight in mask and disguise, staging and pretense, it is imbued with a carnivalesque spirit — far more so than Giovanni Paisiello's operatic version of the material, with which the young Rossini daringly competed. Compared to Paisiello, everything seems energized, charged with drastic liveliness and theatrical conciseness. How different, for example, the first appearance of the barber: Figaro's aria, sparkling with vitality, makes us believe that nothing can be achieved in all of Seville if he doesn't have a hand in it. The ideas that are supposed to help Almaviva through cunning to get his Rosina are less "delicious" than Figaro thinks, but they undoubtedly determine the events, yes even more: Figaro seems like a co-author of the play itself, especially since he keeps stepping out of the action to comment on it from a distance. Rolando Villazón will expand the meta-theatrical dimension — and thus open up new possibilities for comedy and poetry. The quick-change artist Arturo Brachetti embodies a daydreamer who likes to take refuge in old films. But what if the film characters suddenly step out into reality to find themselves in an opera? who likes to take refuge in old films. Als Il barbiere di Siviglia 1816 uraufgeführt wurde, stand der römische Karneval kurz vor seinem Höhepunkt. Die Oper war wie geschaffen für diese entfesselte Atmosphäre: Mit ihrer Lust an Maske und Verkleidung, Inszenierung und Vortäuschung ist sie durchdrungen von karnevaleskem Geist — weit mehr als Giovanni Paisiellos Opernversion des Stoffes, mit der der junge Rossini verwegen in Konkurrenz trat. Im Vergleich zu Paisiello erscheint alles energetisiert, mit drastischer Lebendigkeit und theatraler Prägnanz aufgeladen. Wie anders etwa der erste Auftritt des Barbiers: Figaros vor Vitalität sprühende Arie macht uns glauben, dass in ganz Sevilla nichts auszurichten ist, wenn er nicht seine Hände mit im Spiel hat. Die Ideen, die Almaviva durch List zu seiner Rosina verhelfen sollen, sind zwar weniger „köstlich“, als Figaro meint, ohne Zweifel aber bestimmen sie die Geschehnisse, ja mehr noch: Figaro wirkt wie ein Mitautor des Stückes selbst, zumal er immer wieder aus der Handlung heraustritt, um sie distanziert zu kommentieren. Die metatheatralische Dimension wird Rolando Villazón noch erweitern — und so der Komik und Poesie neue Möglichkeiten öffnen. Der Verwandlungskünstler Arturo Brachetti verkörpert dabei einen Tagträumer, der sich gerne in alte Filme flüchtet. Was aber, wenn die Filmfiguren plötzlich in die Wirklichkeit heraustreten, um sich in einer Oper wiederzufinden?
