The two sisters and Egyptian regents Rossane and Mirena love the same man - their bravest knight Sidaspe, who wants to fight for them against their greatest enemy, the Persian king Cambise. But what both sisters don't know: Sidaspe IS Cambise, who wants to end the old enmity between Persians and Egyptians with this disguise and wants to win over Egypt in amorous rather than in a fighting way. But how can he end his double game?

Strong women and tricky heroes are at the center of Alessandro Scarlatti's opera »Il Cambise«, composed in 1719 for Naples. In the spring of 2022, the Kiel Opera House will finally snatch this high baroque confusion from oblivion and invite you - after the voyages of discovery into the world of Venetian opera of the 17th century with "The Coronation of Poppea" and "The Division of the World" - to join us immerse yourself in the exciting time of 18th century Neapolitan opera.

Acclaimed Roman baroque expert Alessandro Quarta brings Scarlatti's incredibly colourful, energetic music to life again after more than 300 years with an exquisite cast. The confrontation of baroque music with the modern »urban dance« creations of the Berlin choreographer Anja Jadryschnikova promises to be particularly exciting scenically.
