n this »missing link« between Christoph Willibald Gluck's Iphigenia operas and Richard Strauss' Elektra, the betrayed Klytämnestra finally has her say.

In Mycenae we learn of the return of King Agamemnon, who has conquered Troy after ten years of war and is now returning home with Cassandra as his slave and mistress. His wife Klytämnestra can neither forgive him for the sacrifice of her daughter Iphigenia nor for the present adultery and takes terrible revenge.

Salvatore Sciarrino – well known in Wuppertal after a number of premieres and world premieres over the past few decades, most recently ›La porta della legge‹ in 2009 – is one of the most important contemporary Italian composers and has been looking at major theatrical material from a different perspective for years. After versions of 'Macbeth' and 'Lohengrin' he now turns to ancient Greek literature: Aeschylus' 'Oresteia'.
