A jealous drama in the style of a film noir in Paris on the Seine. The mystical transfiguration of a nun in a monastery at the end of the 17th century. A medieval Florence inheritance comedy with so many turbulent twists and turns it makes you dizzy. Three stories, three operas, one evening. At first glance, they don't have much in common, the one-act plays that Giacomo Puccini summarized in 1918 under the fitting, albeit somewhat cumbersome title “Il Trittico”, a “triptych” consisting of three parts, and brought out at the Met in New York. And yet they are linked to one another as a unit, representing three different ways in which one can deal with life and death. Is human existence a melodrama or is it more of a comedy? Or even a thriller? It all depends on the perspective!

The one-act act has a long tradition in Italy since the comic interludes of baroque opera. In 1883 the Italian publisher Sonzogno indicated a possible direction to step out of the shadow of the extensive works of Wagner and Verdi when it announced a competition for one-act opera. Puccini went away empty-handed with his “Le Villi”, but the idea of ​​writing one-act plays would not let him go. First he wanted to dedicate himself to three episodes from Dante's “Divine Comedy” and thus depict Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. After almost 20 years of work and search for material, all that remained of Dante was the comic opera about the Florentine prankster Gianni Schicchi.

Despite this unusual structure, Puccini remains true to himself and his aesthetics: unhappy lovers, heartbreaking death scenes and an unerring feeling for the needs of the common people make the one-act opera a great opera. And with the aria “O mio babbino caro” the composer wrote one of his most famous and popular melodies, which is also widely used in films and advertising.

Eine mittelalterliche Erbschaftskomödie in Florenz mit so vielen turbulenten Wendungen, dass einem schwindelig wird. Drei Geschichten, drei Opern, ein Abend. Auf den ersten Blick haben sie nicht viel gemeinsam, die Einakter, die Giacomo Puccini 1918 unter dem passenden, wenn auch etwas sperrigen Titel „Il Trittico“, ein aus drei Teilen bestehendes „Triptychon“, zusammenfasste und in New York an der Met herausbrachte. Und doch sind sie miteinander zu einer Einheit verbunden, indem sie drei verschiedene Arten repräsentieren, wie man mit Leben und Tod umgehen kann. Ist das menschliche Dasein ein Melodram oder doch eher eine Komödie? Oder gar ein Krimi? Auf den Blickwinkel kommt es an!
