Il Trovatore , which debuted in Rome in 1853, is a panel from Verdi's so-called 'popular trilogy' alongside Rigoletto and La traviata . Themes such as delirium, revenge, family and civil war are expressed in heated dramatic contrasts. Over all the characters towers the gypsy Azucena, an outcast of society. Verdi, who had already crossed the traditions of bel canto, here pushed dramaturgy to the extreme border of the dominant taste, so that some critics accused the plot of confusion and lack of credibility. Yet the music is sublime. "Tacea la notte placida" (Leonora, act I), the Chorus of the anvil and the ballad of Azucena "Stride la vampa" (act II), the cabaletta "Di quel pira" (Manrico, act III) are among the top of this gloomy masterpiece.
