Un prince turc empanaché, un gentilhomme fade (et falot), un chevalier servant (et collant) se disputent l’attention d’une donzelle de caractère. Jusque-là, rien de nouveau. Précisons seulement que la dame est mariée à l’un des trois… Autant dire que le public milanais, qui y voit lors de la première en 1814 une parodie des mœurs italiennes, ne goûte point trop la boutade. Pourtant, l’insistance de Selim pour acheter la belle Fiorilla à son époux Geronio s’avère si cocasse et le drame bouffe si pétillant, ingénieux et subtil que l’œuvre s’impose à la postérité. Après un siècle d’oubli, c’est Maria Callas qui reprend le rôle de Fiorilla en 1954, précédant Montserrat Caballé et Cecilia Bartoli…

Les premiers auditeurs du Turco in Italia ont cru, à cause de la turquerie, assister à une Italiana in Algeri réchauffée, alors qu’il n’en est rien. Gioachino Rossini prend ses distances avec les conventions bouffes en marquant un pas en avant vers la modernité. Felice Romani produit un livret d’une qualité rare, qui évoque Goldoni, Da Ponte de Così fan tutte et précède de cent ans le théâtre de Pirandello en jetant sur la scène un auteur en quête de ses personnages ; il les voit s’agiter autour de lui, infléchit leurs destinées – leur verse quelques coupes de vin pour relancer la machine comique ! Le compositeur de vingt-deux ans qu’est alors Rossini pousse le génie dans les ensembles et ourdit une partition inventive, limpide, faisant virevolter les rôles bouffes comme autant de jouets de l’enfance dans une fête drôle et enivrante.

A plumed Turkish prince, a bland (and drab) gentleman, a servant (and tacky) knight vie for the attention of a strong-willed damsel. Until now, nothing new. Let's just point out that the lady is married to one of the three… Suffice to say that the Milanese public, who saw in the premiere in 1814 a parody of Italian mores, did not relish the joke too much. However, Selim's insistence on buying the beautiful Fiorilla from her husband Geronio turns out to be so comical and the comic drama so sparkling, ingenious and subtle that the work imposes itself on posterity. After a century of oblivion, it was Maria Callas who took over the role of Fiorilla in 1954, preceding Montserrat Caballé and Cecilia Bartoli ...

The first listeners of Turco in Italia believed, because of the Turkishness, to attend a reheated Italiana in Algeri , whereas it is not so. Gioachino Rossini distances himself from food conventions by taking a step forward towards modernity. Felice Romani produces a libretto of rare quality, which evokes Goldoni , Da Ponte de Così fan tutte and predates Pirandello 's theater by a hundred years.by throwing on the stage an author in search of his characters; he sees them agitated around him, influences their destinies – pours them a few cups of wine to restart the comic machine! The twenty-two-year-old composer that Rossini was then pushed the genius into the ensemble and weaved an inventive, limpid score, making the comic roles twirl around like so many childhood toys in a funny and intoxicating party.
