King René's daughter Iolanthe is blind. But the girl is unaware of her blindness: by order of Rene, it is forbidden to mention sight and light in front of her. Father, friends, the old nurse - everyone is friendly, affectionate with Iolanta. The king does not leave the idea of ​​​​healing his daughter, but he is embarrassed by what is needed for this, so that Iolanthe finds out about her blindness and wants to see. The knights Gottfried Vaudemont and his friend Robert appear in the quiet shelter of Iolanthe. Robert is indifferent to Iolanthe, with whom he was engaged in childhood, while Vaudemont falls in love with the girl without memory. Left alone with Iolanthe, Vaudemont asks her for a red rose as a keepsake. The girl hands him a white one, and then Vaudemont, guessing about her blindness, tells her about what she is deprived of - about the beauty of the world, about light. But the words of Vaudemont do not awaken in Iolanthe the desire to see. In desperation, King René threatens Vaudémont with the death penalty if his daughter's treatment fails. Fear for the life of a person who has become close to her prompts Iolanta to agree to an operation that will restore her sight. Meanwhile, Robert confesses to the king that he loves another and therefore cannot marry his daughter.
Upon learning that Iolanthe has gained sight, the king forgives Robert, frees him from the oath that burdened him and gives consent to the marriage of his daughter with Vaudemont. At the wedding, all those present sing a hymn of thanksgiving to the glory of God.


Tchaikovsky's last opera, Iolanta, first saw the limelight a year before the composer's death, in 1892. She was conceived as part of a mixed performance that she shared with the two-act ballet The Nutcracker. The musical affinity of both scores is undoubted, but today Iolanta and The Nutcracker often exist separately on the stage.
The charm and popularity of the solo numbers, the small form and the fairy-tale plot with a happy ending made "Iolanta" a convenient material for the graduation works of the conservators and an attractive repertoire title for the domestic public. However, behind the facade of a fine fairy tale, you can see the symbolist drama. The heroes talk a lot, but there is almost no external action, hidden meanings are guessed in their speeches, in the center of the story is a heroine deprived of sight, who “to know the beauty of the universe” does not need light.
The play of the Danish poet Henrik Herz "King Rene's Daughter" (1845) was familiar to the Russian public in the translation of Vladimir Zotov. She responded to the desire expressed in recent years by Pyotr Ilyich to write an opera on "a plot not of this world." The composer found both the story itself and the libretto written by his brother Modest to be poetic. Tchaikovsky must have been captivated by a heroine who does not consider herself unhappy, because she is warmed by faith, and who is ready to sacrifice herself for love. Musical dramaturgy is built as a movement from darkness to light: from the restless obsession of the introduction to the hymn of light and the laudatory prayer in the finale. Leyla Abbasova

Отец, подруги, старая кормилица – все приветливы, ласковы с Иолантой. Короля не оставляет мысль об исцелении дочери, но приводит в смущение то, что для этого нужно, чтобы Иоланта узнала о своей слепоте и захотела прозреть. В тихом приюте Иоланты появляются рыцари Готфрид Водемон и его друг Роберт. Роберт равнодушен к Иоланте, с которой был помолвлен в детстве, Водемон же без памяти влюбляется в девушку. Оставшись с Иолантой наедине, Водемон просит у нее на память красную розу. Девушка протягивает ему белую, и тогда Водемон, догадавшись о ее слепоте, рассказывает ей о том, чего она лишена, – о красоте мира, о свете. Но слова Водемона не пробуждают в Иоланте желания видеть. В отчаянии король Рене угрожает Водемону смертной казнью в случае неблагоприятного исхода лечения дочери. Опасение за жизнь человека, ставшего ей близким, побуждает Иоланту дать согласие на операцию, которая вернет ей зрение. Тем временем Роберт признаётся королю , что любит другую и поэтому не может взять в жены его дочь.
Узнав о том, что Иоланта обрела зрение, король прощает Роберта, освобождает от тяготившей его клятвы и дает согласие на брак дочери с Водемоном. На свадьбе все присутствующие поют благодарственный гимн во славу Божию.


Последняя опера Чайковского, «Иоланта» впервые увидела свет рампы за год до смерти композитора, в 1892-м. Задумывалась она как часть смешанного представления, которое делила с двухактным балетом «Щелкунчик». Музыкальное родство обеих партитур несомненно, но сегодня «Иоланта» и «Щелкунчик» чаще существуют на театральных подмостках порознь.
Очарование и популярность сольных номеров, малая форма и сказочный сюжет со счастливым концом сделали «Иоланту» удобным материалом для выпускных работ консерваторцев и привлекательным репертуарным названием для отечественной публики. Однако за фасадом благообразной сказки можно разглядеть символистскую драму. Герои много рассуждают, но внешнего действия почти нет, в их речах угадываются скрытые смыслы, в центре истории – героиня, лишенная зрения, которой, «чтобы знать красу вселенной», не нужен свет.
Пьеса датского поэта Хенрика Херца «Дочь короля Рене» (1845) русской публике была знакома в переводе Владимира Зотова. Она отвечала высказанному в последние годы желанию Петра Ильича написать оперу на «сюжет не от мира сего». Композитор находил поэтичными и саму историю, и либретто, сделанное его братом Модестом. Должно быть, Чайковского пленяла героиня, которая не считает себя несчастной, потому что ее согревает вера, и которая готова пожертвовать собой ради любви.
