Премьера «Иоланты», приуроченная к 175-летию со дня рождения П.И. Чайковского, для Александра Петрова и Павла Бубельникова явилась уже четвертой постановкой этой оперы, которая сопровождает их на протяжении всей творческой жизни и всякий раз прочитывается ими по-новому. Первая для них встреча с «Иолантой» произошла в 1973 г. в Малом оперном театре (это был преддипломный спектакль студента-режиссёра А.Петрова), затем в 2004 г. в «Зазеркалье» (спектакль, шедший в сценографии В. Окунева, погиб вместе с декорациями. Всё сценическое убранство той «Иоланты» было уничтожено под рухнувшей крышей склада), третья постановка – в 2006 г. в Центре оперного пения Галины Вишневской в Москве по приглашению великой певицы. И, наконец, в 2015 году – вновь в «Зазеркалье».
И на этот раз публике будет представлена «Иоланта» особенная, не похожая ни на одну из перечисленных постановок, в сценографии и с костюмами Елены Орловой, художницы лучших спектаклей «Зазеркалья» последних лет (россиниевских опер «Золушка» и «Итальянка в Алжире», моцартовской «Так поступают все» и других).

В завершение 2015 года, года П. И. Чайковского, постановка «Иоланты» оказалась особенно значима для театра. Больше четверти века, с первых лет «Зазеркалья», здесь идет любимый петербуржцами спектакль «Детский альбом» с музыкой одноименного фортепианного цикла Чайковского, в инструментовке Леонида Десятникова. В год 175-летия со дня рождения композитора репертуар «Зазеркалья», наконец, обрёл оперу П. И. Чайковского – благословенный материал как для музыкального, так и для сценического осмысления.

«Иоланта» — последняя и самая светлая не только среди всех опер Чайковского, но во всем мировом оперном репертуаре. В ней явлен мистический путь души, а венчает ее восторженный гимн свету, музыка любви и красоты, прорыв к высшему озарению и прозрению. Эта опера — философская сказка о любви, несущей с собой свет и радость познания. Но в «Иоланте» заключены и вечные вопросы – о любви и вере, об истинном зрении и подлинном знании… В них каждый зритель найдет пищу для собственных размышлений. Гениальная музыка Чайковского и история-притча о слепой девушке Иоланте, обретающей зрение, привлечёт аудиторию разных категорий и возрастов. Это — оперные меломаны, молодёжь, подростки и, наконец, родители, обеспокоенные человеческим и культурным формированием своих детей.

В спектакле заняты лучшие силы театра «Зазеркалье», в том числе ведущие молодые солисты. В декабре 2015 года «Иоланта» была показана как подарок горожанам и гостям города в дни IV Международного культурного форума в Санкт-Петербурге.

The premiere of “Iolanta”, dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birth of P.I. Tchaikovsky, for Alexander Petrov and Pavel Bubelnikov was already the fourth production of this opera, which accompanies them throughout their entire creative lives and is read by them in a new way each time. Their first meeting with “Iolanta” took place in 1973 at the Maly Opera Theater (it was a pre-graduation performance by student director A. Petrov), then in 2004 at “Through the Looking Glass” (the performance, staged by V. Okunev, died along with the scenery. All the stage decorations of that “Iolanta” were destroyed under the collapsed roof of the warehouse), the third production was in 2006 at the Galina Vishnevskaya Center for Opera Singing in Moscow at the invitation of the great singer. And finally, in 2015 - again in “Through the Looking Glass”.
And this time the public will be presented with a special “Iolanta”, unlike any of the listed productions, in the set design and with costumes by Elena Orlova, the artist behind the best “Through the Looking Glass” performances of recent years (Rossini’s operas “Cinderella” and “The Italian in Algiers”, Mozart’s “This is what everyone does” and others).

At the end of 2015, the year of P. I. Tchaikovsky, the production of “Iolanta” turned out to be especially significant for the theater. For more than a quarter of a century, since the first years of “Through the Looking Glass,” the play “Children’s Album,” beloved by St. Petersburg residents, has been staged here with the music of Tchaikovsky’s piano cycle of the same name, orchestrated by Leonid Desyatnikov. In the year of the 175th anniversary of the composer’s birth, the repertoire of “Through the Looking Glass” finally acquired the opera by P. I. Tchaikovsky - blessed material for both musical and stage comprehension.

“Iolanta” is the last and brightest not only among all Tchaikovsky’s operas, but in the entire world operatic repertoire. It reveals the mystical path of the soul, and crowns it with an enthusiastic hymn to light, music of love and beauty, a breakthrough to higher illumination and insight. This opera is a philosophical tale about love, bringing with it light and the joy of knowledge. But “Iolanta” also contains eternal questions - about love and faith, about true vision and true knowledge... In them, every viewer will find food for their own thoughts. Tchaikovsky's brilliant music and the parable story about the blind girl Iolanta gaining her sight will attract audiences of different categories and ages. These are opera music lovers, young people, teenagers and, finally, parents concerned about the human and cultural formation of their children.

The performance features the best forces of the Looking Glass Theater, including leading young soloists. In December 2015, “Iolanta” was shown as a gift to citizens and guests of the city during the IV International Cultural Forum in St. Petersburg.
