Seit der Spielzeit 2020/2021 ist Lahav Shani Musikdirektor des Israel Philharmonic Orchestra und nun erstmals mit dem Klangkörper auf Europatournee. Im Gepäck des Orchesters befindet sich der zweite Satz „Psalmen“ aus Paul Ben-Haims Erster Symphonie, „Many Waters“ der israelischen Komponistin Betty Olivero sowie Sergej Rachmaninows letztes Orchesterwerk – die 1940 auf Long Island entstandenen „Symphonischen Tänze“.

Stardirigent Lahav Shani wurde 2018 vom Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest zum Chef berufen, zwei Jahre später trat er offiziell sein Amt als Musikdirektor des Israel Philharmonic Orchestra an, das als musikalischer Botschafter des Staates Israel zu den bedeutendsten Klangkörpern der Welt zählt. Im Rahmen seiner ersten Europatournee als neuer Chefdirigent des Orchesters hat Shani in Berlin Musik aus der Ersten Symphonie von Paul Ben-Haim aufs Programm gesetzt, das der vor den Nationalsozialisten geflohene Komponist 1941 mit dem damaligen Palestine Orchestra uraufführte: „Sicherlich hat der Schrecken, den die Mächte des Bösen verbreiten, in meinem Werk Spuren hinterlassen. Trotzdem bleibt das Werk reine, absolute Musik.“ Es folgt „Many Waters“ der renommierten israelischen Komponistin Betty Olivero, die Luciano Berio „eine sehr beeindruckende Stimme in der jüdischen Kultur“ nannte und die New York Times als „große Entdeckung“ feierte. Nach der Pause stehen Sergej Rachmaninows „Symphonische Tänze“ op. 45 auf dem Programm. Es ist das letzte, 1940 auf Long Island entstandene Orchesterwerk des Komponisten, das – zwischen Walzer und Pandämonium changierend – voller Anspielungen und Zitate Rückschau auf ein bewegtes musikalisches Leben hält. „Die Musik eines Komponisten“, lautete Rachmaninows lakonischer Kommentar, „sollte sein Geburtsland ausdrücken, seine Liebesaffären, seine Religion, die Bücher, die ihn beeinflusst haben, die Bilder, die er liebt.“

Since the season 2020/2021, Lahav Shani has been Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and now tours Europe with the orchestra for the first time. They bring with them “Psalms”, the second movement of Paul Ben-Haim’s First Symphony, “Many Waters” by the Israeli composer Betty Olivero and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s final orchestral work – the “Symphonic Dances” written on Long Island in 1940.

The star conductor Lahav Shani was appointed Principal Conductor of Rotterdam’s Philharmonisch Orkest in 2018 and two years later officially took up his post as Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which is regarded as one of the world’s leading orchestras and a musical ambassador for the state of Israel. As part of his first European tour as the orchestra’s new principal conductor, Shani will present music from the First Symphony by Paul Ben-Haim, a composer who fled the Nazis and a work first performed by what was then the Palestine Orchestra in 1941: “The horrors spread by the forces of evil have definitely left a mark on my work. Nevertheless, the work remains pure and absolute music.” This is followed by “Many Waters” by the celebrated Israeli composer Betty Olivero, whom Luciano Berio called “a very impressive voice in Jewish culture” and was heralded by the New York Times as “a great discovery”. The programme after the interval consists of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances” opus 45. This was the composer’s final work, written on Long Island in 1940, and – alternating between waltzes and pandemonium – it is full of allusions and quotations that look back on an eventful musical life. “A composer’s music,” Rachmaninoff commented laconically, “should express the land of his birth, his love affairs, his religion, the books that have inspired him and the pictures he loves.”
