Mahler 's Symphony 2 , 'Resurrection' is a score of colossal dimensions, both in duration and in the arrangement of effective orchestral and vocal elements. It requires, for example, ten trumpets and a minimum of eight trumpets in the brass, seven percussionists, as many strings as possible and a huge mixed choir together with soprano and alto soloists. James Gaffigan is an expert. He has conducted almost all of Mahler's symphonies and his version of the Second in the Basilica of Saint-Denis in 2014 with the National Orchestra of France "remained in the memory", as published by Le Monde, after the headline "Gaffigan revives Mahler in Saint-Denis". Music for reflection, about life, death, and the hope of resurrection, expressed in intense contrasts and passages of frightening tenderness, with the voices of Sydney Mancasola and Jamie Barton.
