Uroczyste nieszpory KV 339 z roku 1780 są ostatnim utworem Wolfganga Amadeusa Mozarta w jego burzliwej karierze organisty i kompozytora katedry w Salzburgu. Posadę tę otrzymał zaledwie rok wcześniej i działalność swoją rozpoczął od skomponowania arcydzieła: Mszy C-dur KV 317 zwanej przez potomnych „Koronacyjną”. Oba utwory wykazują bliskie związki z salzburską praktyką wykonawczą, zarówno pod względem potraktowania formy, jak i instrumentacji. Nasza muzyka kościelna różni się bardzo od tej uprawianej we Włoszech. Nawet jeśli msza ma zwierać wszystkie swoje części i nawet gdy jest przeznaczona na najbardziej uroczystą okazję, gdy arcybiskup osobiście celebruje mszę, całość musi się zamknąć w trzech kwadransach. Potrzeba wprawy w tym rodzaju kompozycji, zwłaszcza, że trzeba wykorzystać wszystkie instrumenty z trąbkami i kotłami włącznie – pisał Mozart, ale im trudniejsze zadanie przed nim stało, tym wspanialszy utwór komponował. Msza, przeznaczona na liturgię Niedzieli Wielkanocnej roku 1779, w istocie zamyka się w niecałych trzech kwadransach, może więc być użyta jako element uroczystej liturgii – pamiętamy liturgiczny kontekst wykonania w Bazylice św. Piotra w Rzymie pod przewodem muzykalnego papieża Jana Pawła II. Opracowanie poszczególnych części mszy nie jest rozbite na numery, jak w mszach uroczystych, ale stanowi zwartą kompozycję. Partie solowe płynnie przechodzą w chóralne i znów się z nich wyłaniają. Całości towarzyszy przepyszna instrumentacja z typowym dla Salzburga zestawem smyczków, składającym się z „basów”, do których zalicza się także fagot, oraz dwojga skrzypiec. Altówek nie stosowano, podobnie jak fletów. Wśród dętych mamy oboje i rogi, a także trzy puzony, wzmacniające niższe partie chóru, oraz wspomniane przez Mozarta trąbki i kotły. Nie wiadomo, dlaczego mszę nazwano „Koronacyjną”. Sam Mozart uważał ją za swe najlepsze dzieło w tym gatunku i po opuszczeniu Salzburga wszędzie ją ze sobą zabierał. Dzieło było wykonywane wielokrotnie za życia kompozytora, w tym, być może, podczas obchodów koronacji Leopolda II i Franciszka I (pod dyrekcją Salieriego). Na początku XIX wieku utwór stał się istotnie ulubionym dziełem uświetniającym uroczystości dworu wiedeńskiego. Msza stanowi prawdziwe ukoronowanie twórczości religijnej cesarza kompozytorów, Wolfganga Amadeusa I Wielkiego. Słusznie więc nazywamy Mszę C-dur „Koronacyjną”.

Solemn Vespers KV 339 from 1780 is the last work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in his turbulent career as organist and composer of Salzburg Cathedral. He had been given the job only a year earlier and had begun his career by composing a masterpiece: the Mass in C majorKV 317 called "Coronation" by posterity. Both works show close ties to Salzburg performance practice, both in terms of the treatment of form and instrumentation. Our church music is very different from that practiced in Italy. Even if the Mass is to contain all its parts, and even if it is intended for the most solemn occasion, when the Archbishop personally celebrates the Mass, the whole must be completed in three quarters of an hour. It takes practice in this type of composition, especially since you have to use all the instruments, including trumpets and timpani, wrote Mozart, but the more difficult the task faced him, the more wonderful the piece he composed. The Mass, intended for the liturgy of Easter Sunday in 1779, in fact closes in less than three-quarters of an hour, it can therefore be used as an element of a solemn liturgy - we remember the liturgical context of its performance in St. Peter in Rome under the leadership of the musical Pope John Paul II. The arrangement of the individual parts of the mass is not broken down into numbers, as in solemn masses, but is a compact composition. The solo parts flow smoothly into the choral parts and emerge from them again. The whole is accompanied by delicious instrumentation with a set of strings typical of Salzburg, consisting of "bass", which also includes a bassoon, and two violins. Violas were not used, nor were flutes. Among the wind instruments we have oboes and horns, as well as three trombones, strengthening the lower parts of the choir, and the trumpets and timpani mentioned by Mozart. It is not known why the mass was called "The Coronation". Mozart himself considered it his best work in this genre and, after leaving Salzburg, took it with him everywhere. The work was performed many times during the composer's lifetime, possibly including the coronation celebrations of Leopold II and Francis I (conducted by Salieri). At the beginning of the 19th century, the work became a favorite piece to grace the celebrations of the Viennese court.
