Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice achieved a masterpiece with Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970/1971: They translated the last days of Jesus of Nazareth into a contemporary rock opera in which hippieism, doubts about faith, star cult and spirituality complement each other in a fascinating way. It was Lloyd Webber's first commercial success: the London production ran 3358 performances at the Palace Theater from 1972 to 1980. Jesus Christ Superstar was filmed in 1973 , and there have been numerous new productions worldwide over the past 50 years. Songs like Heaven on Their Minds , Everything's Alright , This Jesus Must Die , I Don't Know How to Love Him , and the theme songSuperstar have become all-time hits, The Last Supper has even been included – with new lyrics – in a Catholic hymn book. Director Erik Petersen is making his debut at the St.Gallen Theater with a new production of this modern classic.
