The two authors saw a parallel in this to the phenomenon of the rock star, who hovers between messianic worship and populist condemnation. And so Webber and Rice also interpret the Jesus story as that of a pop star - without changing even one iota of the plot of the Passion. Even more provocative, however, is the fact that the last days of the Messiah are portrayed from the perspective of the betrayer Judas. As expected, this provoked accusations of blasphemy, but the worldwide success of the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” could not be stopped. The title role in the Landestheater Detmold production is sung by Tobias Bieri, one of the most experienced actors of Lloyd Webber's Jesus character on German stages.
