In 1971 the legendary rock opera Andrew Lloyd Webbers premiered on Broadway in New York and made the then 23-year-old Webber and his lyricist Tim Rice overnight stars in US musicals. The last days of the Passion story are told from the critical perspective of Judas, Jesus 'friend and traitor, and closely based on the biblical model: Mary Magdalene's love for Jesus, the last supper, the judgment of Herod, Judas' betrayal of Jesus, the way of the cross and Jesus' death on the cross.

"Jesus Christ Superstar" is a story about the fame and fall of an idol, about worship and hatred, faith and doubt, friendship and betrayal, despair and hope. With rousing music and moving words, the piece has been inspiring for 50 years, illustrates the birth of a world religion and warns of a belief that is becoming fanaticism.
