In 1971, the legendary rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber premiered on Broadway in New York and made the then 21-year-old Webber and his lyricist Tim Rice superstars in the US musical business. The last days of the Passion story are told from the critical perspective of Judas, Jesus' friend and betrayer, and in close reference to the biblical original: Mary Magdalene's love for Jesus, the Last Supper, Herod's judgment, Judas' betrayal Jesus, the Way of the Cross and Jesus' death on the cross. »Jesus Christ Superstar« is a story about fame and the last journey of an idol, about worship and hate, faith and doubt, friendship and betrayal, despair and hope. With rousing music and moving words, the young creators set themselves apart from the religious establishment in America in the 1970s and opened up an unprecedented perspective on the passion of Jesus. For 50 years, the play has touched and inspired, illustrated the birth of a world religion and warned against faith becoming fanaticism.

Aus der kritischen Perspektive von Judas, Jesus’ Freund und Verräter, und in enger Anlehnung an die biblische Vorlage, werden die letzten Tage der Passionsgeschichte erzählt: Die Liebe Maria Magdalenas zu Jesus, das letzte Abendmahl, das Urteil Herodes’, Judas’ Verrat an Jesus, der Kreuzweg und Jesu Tod am Kreuz. »Jesus Christ Superstar« ist eine Geschichte über Ruhm und den letzten Weg eines Idols, über Anbetung und Hass, Glaube und Zweifel, Freundschaft und Verrat, Verzweiflung und Hoffnung. Mit mitreißender Musik und ergreifenden Worten setzten sich die jungen Macher ab vom religiösen Establishment im Amerika der 1970er-Jahre und eröffneten eine nie dagewesene Perspektive auf die Leidensgeschichte Jesu. Seit 50 Jahren berührt und begeistert das Stück, illustriert die Geburt einer Weltreligion und warnt vor Glauben, der zum Fanatismus wird.
