The setting to music of the last days of the life of Christ is a tradition that begins at the beginning of Christendom. The first manuscript sources dating back to the IX th century. The genre has changed little until XIV th century mainly the gradual introduction of the differentiation of roles (the narrator, Christ ...). This will be through the Lutheran Reformation in the early sixteenth th century he wins acclaim, both by requiring that the text is sung, not in Latin but in German in order to be understood by everyone, and above all, under the influence of Italian opera, by developing a much richer polyphonic form, now alternating recitatives, arias and large choral pages. The Passion according to Saint John,composed in 1723-24 for Leipzig was the first large-scale work written for this city where Bach had recently settled and for which he wrote a good half of his cantatas as well as the Christmas Oratorio . Even today, this majestic page, which strikes by the beauty of the arias entrusted to the soloists and by the intensity of its choral parts, is considered to be one of the peaks of the composer's corpus.

La mise en musique des derniers jours de la vie du Christ est une tradition qui débute au début de la chrétienté. Les premières sources manuscrites remontent au IXe siècle. Le genre évolue peu jusqu’au XIVe siècle avec principalement l’introduction progressive de la différenciation des rôles (le narrateur, le Christ...). Ce sera au travers de la réforme luthérienne au début du XVIe siècle qu’il gagne ses lettres de noblesse, à la fois en imposant que le texte soit chanté, non plus en latin, mais en allemand afin d’être compréhensible par tous, et surtout, sous l’influence de l’opéra italien, en développant une forme polyphonique beaucoup plus riche faisant désormais alterner récitatifs, airs et grandes pages chorales. La Passion selon Saint Jean, composée en 1723-24 pour Leipzig fut la première œuvre de vaste dimension écrite pour cette ville où Bach s’était installé depuis peu et pour laquelle il écrira une bonne moitié de ses cantates ainsi que l’Oratorio de Noël. Aujourd’hui encore, cette page majestueuse, qui frappe par la beauté des airs confiés aux solistes et par l’intensité de ses parties chorales, est considérée comme l’un des sommets du corpus du compositeur.
