La Passione secondo Giovanni, che rientra fra i sommi monumenti sonori di Johann Sebastian Bach, vide la luce nel periodo in cui il musicista ricopriva l’incarico di “Cantor et Director Musices” in quel di Lipsia. Non solo docente di canto, dunque, ma in più organizzatore e compositore di musica sacra per le due principali chiese della città.

Anche questa esperienza – come quella precedente, seppur molto diversa, fatta alla corte di Cöthen – fu per lui estremamente stimolante.
Basti pensare che durante la lunga permanenza a Lipsia Bach dovette sovrintendere all’esecuzione di ben 26 Passioni del Venerdì Santo: alcune di sua composizione, altre frutto del lavoro di musicisti come Telemann e Händel.

La Johannes-Passion venne sicuramente eseguita a partire dal 1724 in almeno quattro occasioni e in altrettante diverse versioni.

The Passion according to John , which is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's supreme sound monuments, saw the light in the period in which the musician held the position of "Cantor et Director Musices" in Leipzig. The Johannes-Passion was certainly performed starting from 1724 on at least four occasions and in as many different versions.
