In a special folder, Johann Sebastian Bach collected movements from various of his sacred compositions, which he probably considered particularly successful. Towards the end of his life, Bach condensed this bundle into what is probably the most important mass setting in music history: the Mass in B minor. With its contrapuntal density and mystical-symbolistic penetration, the monumental work can be understood as the sonorous quintessence of Bach's art of sacred music, which to this day enjoys our greatest admiration.

In einer besonderen Mappe sammelte Johann Sebastian Bach Sätze aus verschiedenen seiner geistlichen Kompositionen, die er vermutlich für besonders gelungen hielt. Gegen Ende seines Lebens verdichtete Bach dieses Konvolut zur wohl bedeutendsten Messvertonung der Musikgeschichte: der Messe in h-Moll. Das monumentale Werk kann in seiner kontrapunktischen Dichte und mystisch-symbolistischen Durchwirkung als klingende Quintessenz der Bach’schen Sakralmusikkunst verstanden werden, die bis heute unsere grösste Bewunderung geniesst.
