19세기 러시아 작곡가들은 그들 고유의 시정과 감성을 어떻게 하면 음악으로 정교하게 표현할 수 있을까에 대해 고민했다. 차이코프스키는 소재와 정서를 러시아 고유의 것에서 취하면서도 표현방법은 서유럽적인 스타일을 선택했는데, 이러한 접근법은 알렉산드르 글라주노프에게도 큰 영향을 주었다. 젊은 시절 러시아 5인조 등 민족주의 음악가들의 강한 영향 아래에 있었던 그였지만 &lt;교향곡 제4번&gt;을 경계로 점차 화사하고 세련된 서구 낭만주의로 표현의 중심을 옮겨가게 된다. 그 결과 러시아 음악 특유의 처연한 우수가 넘치면서도. 구조적으로는 브람스처럼 단단하고 감성적으로는 프랑스 근대 관현악의 화사한 느낌까지 깃든 아름다운 작품이 탄생하였다.

How can 19th century Russian composers elaborately express their unique poetic sentiments and emotions through music? I thought about it. Tchaikovsky took materials and emotions from indigenous Russian sources, but chose a Western European style for expression, and this approach also had a great influence on Aleksandr Glazunov. In his youth, he was under the strong influence of nationalist musicians such as the Russian Quintet, but with <Symphony No. 4>, he gradually shifted his focus of expression to bright and sophisticated Western romanticism. As a result, he was full of the sorrowful excellence characteristic of Russian music. A beautiful work was created that was structurally as solid as Brahms and emotionally had the bright feel of modern French orchestra. Max Bruch's <Scottish Fantasia> is also a 'lyric poem of longing' performed in collaboration with violin and orchestra centered on folk song melodies. These works, which convey a simple and transparent beauty while using materials rich in the emotions of specific regions such as Russia and Scotland, can be said to be watercolor paintings drawn with music.
