De Kerstmatinee wordt om 14.15 uur rechtstreeks uitgezonden op NPO Radio 4 en om 15.00 uur op televisie op NPO 2.

In februari 2020 leidde Myung-whun Chung het Concertgebouworkest in Mahlers Negende symfonie: ‘indrukwekkend’ vond onder meer de NRC, die de uitvoering de volle vijf sterren gunde. Nu is de Zuid-Koreaanse meester terug met de vurige Vijfde. Al 127 keer stond die symfonie bij het Concertgebouworkest op de lessenaars; de eerste keer onder leiding van de componist zelf in 1906.  

Het heeft even geduurd voor het Amsterdamse publiek deze caleidoscopische symfonie in zijn hart sloot; de grote contrasten roepen uitersten aan emoties op. ‘Elk deel heeft zijn vrienden en vijanden’, merkte Mahler op. Toch lijkt het Adagietto, het kloppende hart van de symfonie, louter vrienden te hebben. Volgens Willem Mengelberg, de toenmalige chef-dirigent die in nauw contact stond met de componist, was het een pure liefdesverklaring aan Mahlers echtgenote Alma. Oordeel zelf, wanneer Mahler-expert Myung-whun Chung de leiding heeft over de Vijfde symfonie.

In February 2020, Myung-whun Chung led the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Mahler's Ninth Symphony : 'impressive' was the opinion of the NRC, among others, who awarded the performance the full five stars. Now the South Korean master is back with the fiery Fifth . That symphony has already appeared on the music stands of the Concertgebouw Orchestra 127 times; the first time conducted by the composer himself in 1906.  

It took a while for the Amsterdam public to embrace this kaleidoscopic symphony; the great contrasts evoke extremes of emotions. "Each part has its friends and enemies," Mahler noted. Yet the Adagietto, the beating heart of the symphony, seems to have only friends. According to Willem Mengelberg, the then chief conductor who was in close contact with the composer, it was a pure declaration of love to Mahler's wife Alma.
