Alexander Zemlinsky's opera "Clothes Make the Man" already bears the "moral of her story" in the title. Based on the novellas "The People of Seldwyla" by Gottfried Keller, it tells the story of the tailor Wenzel Strapinski, who comes to the Swiss town of Goldach as a stranger and is mistaken for a Polish count because of his noble appearance. Of course, the "beautiful appearance" throws the entire village community into confusion ... Until in the end, true love emerges as the victor over noblesse and possessions.

The composer Alexander Zemlinksy worked in the years 1904-1910 as music director and first conductor at the Kaiserjubiläums-Stadttheater, which later became the Volksoper. On October 2, 1910, "Clothes Make People" was premiered at our house under the direction of the composer.

On the occasion of the 150th birthday and to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Alexander Zemlinsky's death in the 2021/22 season, the work returns to the Volksoper's program in a concert performance..
