Give your men an impression - a visit to the theater! In honor of Defender of the Fatherland Day! The most heroic opera written by a chemist for real men!

On April 18, 1869, at a musical evening with L. I. Shestakova, V. V. Stasov proposed to the composer "The Lay of Igor's Campaign" as an opera plot. A.P. Borodin set to work with interest, visited the vicinity of Putivl, studied historical and musical sources associated with the described time.

The opera was written for eighteen years, but in 1887 the composer died and the opera remained unfinished. According to A.P. Borodin's notes, the work was completed by Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov and Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov. It is believed that Glazunov restored from memory the overture, which he heard in the author's performance on the piano (he himself refuted this legend on the pages of the Russian Musical Newspaper) [1]. He also composed and orchestrated the third act almost entirely. N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov orchestrated the prologue, acts one, two and four and the Polovtsian march.

Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov and, possibly, also A.K. Lyadov together orchestrated a suite of "Polovtsian dances" in the second act, which gained immense popularity. Continuing the traditions of Glinka's opera A Life for the Tsar, the event development in the storyline of the opera Prince Igor reflects the grandeur of the folk scenes with the powerful sound of the chorus, and at the same time, the extraordinary beauty arias of the heroes: Yaroslavna, Konchakovna, Vladimir and a Polovetskaya girl.

Alexander Porfirevich Borodin managed to orchestrate part of the prologue (everything except Scene of the Eclipse), the recitative and aria of Prince Vladimir Galitsky (Scene I of Act I), Yaroslavna's aria and her scene with girls (Scene II of Act I, 1879), Konchakovna's cavatina (II act, 1869), recitative and cavatina of Prince Vladimir (act II), Konchak's aria (act II), Yaroslavna's lamentation (act IV, 1875), folk choir (act IV, 1879) and the final scene of act IV - score for orchestra with participation tenor Eroshka, bass Skula and chorus.

The trio of Igor, Vladimir, Konchakovna and the finale of the third act with the chorus, Konchakovna and Konchak were written by Borodin and completed by Glazunov, who subsequently orchestrated them in 1888.

Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov themselves wrote the scene of Act II, with the participation of Konchakovna and the choir in 1887.

The composers were friendly and worked in a close circle, therefore the musical style of the opera represents artistic integrity. Despite the fact that Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov orchestrated most of the music (some of which was not recorded at all), the latter insisted that "Prince Igor" is entirely an opera by Alexander Porfirievich Borodin "- from the book by A. Maikapar [2] [ 3] How fair this is can be judged by comparing the edition of Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov with the recently published author's edition of the opera [4].

The premiere of the opera took place with great success on October 23 (November 4), 1890 in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theater.

There is an opinion in the press [5] (based on the work of Pavel Alexandrovich Lamm on the reconstruction of the author's version of the opera) that the incompleteness of Prince Igor is largely a legend and that instead of just orchestrating part of the numbers, Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov preferred anew rewrite most of the music, absolutely complete by the author.
