Everyone, even if they are not familiar with Prince Igor, has at least once heard the chorus “Fly away on the wings of the wind” or the aria “Oh give me, give me freedom”: the opera based on “The Tale of Igor's Campaign” after the premiere in 1890 broke up into separate little masterpieces. It is always difficult to put them together: Alexander Borodin, who devoted most of his time to studying chemistry, wrote the opera for 18 years with interruptions, but did not have time to finish it - and there is still no unequivocal answer in what order the numbers and scenes of the opera should be performed.

The stage director Alexander Lazarev insisted that the Yekaterinburg performance end with Polovtsian Dances. The eminent maestro sees in this the following of the logic of action and the logic of Borodin: the famous dance scene ceases to be just a colorful divertissement, becoming the dramatic culmination of the performance - a demonstration of the power of the Polovtsy in front of the Russian prince, who has just celebrated his wedding with the khan's daughter. Lazarev's co-authors, directors from St. Petersburg, created the performance following the tradition of the "grand style" - with elaborate mass mise-en-scenes, classical pictorial scenery and detailed historical costumes.

Каждый, даже если не знаком с «Князем Игорем», хоть раз слышал хор «Улетай на крыльях ветра» или арию «О дайте, дайте мне свободу»: опера по мотивам «Слова о полку Игореве» после премьеры в 1890 году распалась на отдельные маленькие шедевры. Собрать их воедино всегда представляет трудность: Александр Бородин, большую часть времени уделявший занятиям химией, писал оперу 18 лет с перерывами, да так и не успел закончить — и до сих пор нет однозначного ответа, в каком порядке должны исполняться номера и картины оперы.

Дирижер-постановщик Александр Лазарев настоял, чтобы екатеринбургский спектакль завершался «Половецкими плясками». Именитый маэстро видит в этом следование логике действия и логике Бородина: знаменитая танцевальная сцена перестает быть лишь красочным дивертисментом, становясь драматической кульминацией спектакля — демонстрацией силы половцев перед русским княжичем, который только что справил свадьбу с ханской дочерью. Соавторы Лазарева, постановщики из Петербурга, создавали спектакль, следуя традиции «большого стиля» — с подробно разработанными массовыми мизансценами, классическими живописными декорациями и детально исполненными историческими нарядами.
