The most played Slovak opera Krútňava is inspired by the short story by Mila Urban Za Vyšný mlynom. The libretto was written by Eugen Suchoň and tenor Štefan Hoza. The story of love and hate that results in the drama of conscience is set in a folk environment. The ballad story is based on the motive of guilt for the unacknowledged murder of a sock in love. The composer psychologically deepened the character of the negative hero Ondrej, facing his opponent old Štelin, the father of the slain Jan. At the same time, the composer emphasized the role of the village community and its moral integrity. The compositional basis of the opera is a vocal melody inspired by a Slovak folk song and its distinctive Suchoň stylization.
 After almost sixty years, Krutňava returned to the original form, which the Slovak National Theater presented at the world premiere of the work in 1949, in the staging of the Banská Bystrica State Opera.
