The Austrian bass-baritone Philipp Mayer - as Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms - and the French pianist Justine Eckhaut - as Death himself - play around the end of life with morbid ease in their recital.

In addition to selected songs from Schubert's posthumously published Swan Song, the program also includes the cycle Four Serious Songs by Johannes Brahms and three songs by the German composer Robert Kahn. None other than death itself spans the dramatic arc in this amusing scenic implementation and fails miserably. At first he waits impatiently for Schubert's death, only to be surprised by his reincarnation in Brahms' body.

Mit morbider Leichtigkeit umspielen der österreichische Bassbariton Philipp Mayer – als Franz Schubert und Johannes Brahms – und die französische Pianistin Justine Eckhaut – als der Tod höchstpersönlich – in ihrem Liederabend das Lebensende.

Neben ausgewählten Liedern aus Schuberts posthum veröffentlichten „Schwanengesang“ stehen auch der Zyklus „Vier ernste Gesänge“ von Johannes Brahms sowie drei Lieder des deutschen Komponisten Robert Kahn auf dem Programm. Kein Geringerer als der Tod selbst spannt in dieser amüsanten szenischen Umsetzung den dramaturgischen Bogen und scheitert dabei gewaltig. Zuerst wartet er ungeduldig auf Schuberts Ableben, um dann von dessen Reinkarnation in Brahms’ Körper überrascht zu werden.
