The artists Rodolfo, Marcello, Schaunard and Colline live in the attic of a Parisian house on the verge of poverty. When the young neighbor Mimi knocks on her door to ask for light for her candle, another worry comes into Rodolfo's life: love. Despite Mimi's illness, they decide to stay together until spring. Can this great but so fragile love survive the bitter winter?

"It is a wonderful and a terrible life that has its victors and martyrs" wrote Murger in his novel "Scènes de la vie de bohème", and on the basis of this model the successful librettists Giacosa and Illica created a text of heartbreaking beauty and exceptional musicality.

Puccini himself experienced such poor student years in Milan; his score for “La Bohème” breathes the pulsating spirit of youth and the poetry of suffering. Despite the failure of the premiere in 1896, this hymn to love has established itself as the standard operatic repertoire despite all difficulties and is considered Puccini's masterpiece, which not only defined his operatic aesthetics, but also set a clear trend as the epitome of verismo.

This artist opera will be brought to the stage by one of the most important contemporary artists, Markus Lüpertz, who - in addition to the stage and costume - will also be responsible for the direction for the first time.
