La bohème, staged by the English director Ian Judge, turned out to be one of Puccini's most successful productions at the Mariinsky Theatre. It is conservative in a good way, and although the action is transferred from the 1830s to the 1930s, this does not harm the spirit of the music in the least. At the beginning and end of the opera, when the events take place in the attic, which the artist Rudolf is filming, there is a huge window overlooking the Latin Quarter on the stage: it is so picturesque that it can be indicated in the program as the hero of the performance. The interior of the Momus cafe, where the characters gather to celebrate Christmas, is worked out to the smallest detail. It creates an almost cinematic atmosphere. It shows a little anxiety of the interwar period, but it does not conflict with the music, on the contrary, it adds to it a sense of the tragedy of what is happening and enhances those joys, that are in the lives of heroes. This performance is a wonderful example of how you can stage in a historical style and preserve the feeling of liveliness and freshness of a work created one hundred and twenty-five years ago.Denis Velikzhanin

«Богема», осуществленная английским режиссером Йаном Джаджем, оказалась одной из самых удачных пуччиниевских постановок в Мариинском театре. Она по-хорошему консервативна, и хотя действие перенесено из 1830-х в 1930-е, духу музыки это ничуть не вредит. В начале и в конце оперы, когда события совершаются в мансарде, которую снимает художник Рудольф, на сцене присутствует огромное выходящее на Латинский квартал окно: оно настолько живописно, что в программке его можно указать как героя спектакля. Интерьер кафе «Момюс», где персонажи собираются, чтобы отпраздновать Рождество, – проработан до мельчайших деталей. Он создает почти кинематографическую атмосферу. В ней немного сквозит тревога межвоенного времени, но она не вступает в противоречие с музыкой, – напротив, добавляет ей ощущения трагичности происходящего и усиливает те радости, которые есть в жизни героев.
