“For a long time I did not dare to turn to “La Boheme” only because I often saw a falsehood between the deliberate operatic presentation of singers who are no longer at all young and the subtle, vulnerable soul of this work, in which the main characters are young, sincere, feeling heroes. The St. Petersburg Opera's repertoire includes quite a few works by Giacomo Puccini - Cio-Cio-san, Tosca, Gianni Schicchi, Sister Angelica. The theater does not need just one more name of the work of this composer for show. We do not turn to operas that we just want to stage, but we try to talk about what worries and worries the most today. We have a series of performances about the fate of a woman in the modern world - Britten's Desecration of Lucrezia, Verdi's La Traviata, Puccini's Cio-Cio-san and Tosca, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. Today I am especially concerned about the problem of youth, which is fragmented, abandoned by the state, everyone is trying to survive on their own. And the only thing that unites is the feeling of love. But this innermost is also interfered with from the outside - they endlessly show Dom-2, Dom-3, something else, where feelings are exhibited as if at an auction. The play "La Boheme" is an attempt by our team to talk about this topic. The work is dedicated to friendship, love - very intimate and holy, something that has always been a secret. The main artistic device of the performance is a deliberate rejection of the usual theatrical decorativeness. The scenography is dominated by a staircase leading to nowhere, the rest of the design elements - an oven, an easel, a couch - are intended only to emphasize the reality of stage life. Time of action - the twenty-first century. Modern youth is so assimilated that this story can take place in Paris, and in St. Petersburg, and in any other city - it does not matter. Most of all, I wanted to preserve the truth of human relations in La Boheme. The main difficulty in staging is in combining the conventions of singing existence and the authenticity of life. I wanted to shake off even a hint of the pompous, aggressive operatic message from the artists. "La Boheme" is an absolutely transparent story. To play it, you need mature professionalism, which is achieved only with age, Those are the same scissors. In my theater, the soloists are quite experienced, professional and young, they have an organic age, which is very important for me. I went from their capabilities, texture, psychophysics. We sought to achieve the truth of existence on the opera stage. What came out of it is for the viewer to judge.

«Я долго не решался обратиться к «Богеме» только потому, что часто видел фальшь между нарочитой оперной подачей уже совсем не молодых певцов и тонкой, ранимой душой этого произведения, в котором главные действующие лица — юные, искренние, чувствующие герои. В репертуаре «Санктъ-Петербургъ Оперы» достаточно произведений Джакомо Пуччини — «Чио-Чио-сан», «Тоска», «Джанни Скикки», «Сестра Анжелика». Просто еще одно название произведения этого композитора для галочки театру не нужно. Мы не обращаемся к операм, которые просто хочется ставить, а пытаемся говорить о том, что сегодня больше всего беспокоит, тревожит. У нас есть цикл спектаклей о судьбе женщины в современном мире — «Поругание Лукреции» Бриттена, «Травиата» Верди, те же «Чио-Чио-сан» и «Тоска» Пуччини, «Лючия ди Ламмермур» Доницетти. Сегодня меня особо волнует проблема молодежи, которая разобщена, заброшена государством, каждый пытается выжить сам по себе. И единственное, что объединяет, — чувство любви. Но и в это сокровенное идет вмешательство извне — по ящику без конца показывают «Дом-2», «Дом-3», что-то еще, где чувства выставляются как на аукционе. Спектакль «Богема» — попытка нашего коллектива поговорить на эту тему. Произведение посвящено дружбе, любви — очень интимному и святому, тому, что всегда было тайной. Легко изменить любви, но сложно потом снова найти ее, второй шанс Бог может не дать.

Основной художественный прием спектакля — намеренный отказ от привычной театральной декоративности. Доминанта сценографии — лестница, ведущая в никуда, остальные элементы оформления — печь, мольберт, кушетка — призваны лишь подчеркнуть реальность сценической жизни. Время действия — двадцать первый век. Современная молодежь настолько ассимилирована, что эта история может происходить и в Париже, и в Петербурге, и в любом другом городе — значения не имеет. Больше всего я хотел сохранить в «Богеме» правду человеческих отношений. Основная сложность при постановке — в соединении условности певческого существования и достоверности жизни. Хотелось стряхнуть с артистов даже намек на напыщенный, агрессивный оперный посыл. «Богема» — абсолютно прозрачная история. Чтобы ее сыграть, нужен зрелый профессионализм, достигающийся только с возрастом, — вот те самые ножницы. В моем театре солисты достаточно опытны, профессиональны и молоды, в них присутствует органика возраста, что для меня очень важно. Я шел от их возможностей, фактуры, психофизики. Мы стремились добиться правды существования на оперной сцене. Что из этого получилось — судить зрителю».
