La Bohème est un opéra en quatre tableaux de Giacomo Puccini qui relate la destinée à Paris de trois artistes et un philosophe dans le quartier latin de 1830.
Le superbe livret, écrit en collaboration avec Giuseppe Giacosa et Luigi Illica, a été réalisé d’après l’ouvrage d’Henry Murger « Scènes de la vie de bohème », roman-feuilleton dont les épisodes furent pour la plupart publiés dans la revue LE CORSAIRE – Journal des spectacles, de la littérature, des arts et des modes (Paris, 1823 à 1858).

Voici un extrait du texte de Murger :
« Comme tout état social, la Bohème comporte des nuances différentes, des genres divers qui se subdivisent eux-mêmes et dont il ne sera pas inutile d’établir la classification. Nous commencerons par la Bohème ignorée, la plus nombreuse. Elle se compose de la grande famille des artistes pauvres, fatalement condamnés à la loi de l’incognito, parce qu’ils ne savent pas ou ne peuvent pas trouver un coin de publicité pour attester leur existence dans l’art, et, par ce qu’ils sont déjà, prouver ce qu’ils pourraient être un jour. Ceux-là, c’est la race des obstinés rêveurs pour qui l’art est demeuré une foi et non un métier, gens enthousiastes, convaincus, à qui la vue d’un chef- d’œuvre suffit pour donner la fièvre, et dont le cœur loyal bat hautement devant tout ce qui est beau, sans demander le nom du maître et de l’école. Nous ajouterons que la Bohème n’existe et n’est possible qu’à Paris.

Quatrième opéra de Puccini, La Bohème est devenue l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de l’opéra italien. Le compositeur dépeint de manière impressionniste le Paris des années 1830. Il met en musique, avec une certaine nostalgie, ses propres souvenirs de vie d’étudiant au Conservatoire, et raconte l’histoire amoureuse de deux couples, l’une tragique, l’autre fantaisiste.

La Bohème is an opera in four paintings by Giacomo Puccini which recounts the destiny in Paris of three artists and a philosopher in the Latin Quarter of 1830.
The superb libretto, written in collaboration with Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, was produced from Henry Murger's work "Scenes from bohemian life" , a serialized novel whose episodes were mostly published in the magazine LE CORSAIRE - Journal of spectacles, literature, arts and fashions (Paris, 1823 to 1858).

Here is an excerpt from Murger's text:
“Like any social state, Bohemia comprises different shades, various genres which subdivide themselves and which it will not be useless to establish the classification. We will begin with the ignored Bohemia, the most numerous. It is made up of the great family of poor artists, fatally condemned to the law of incognito, because they do not know or cannot find a corner of publicity to attest to their existence in art, and, by this they already are, to prove what they could be one day. These are the race of obstinate dreamers for whom art has remained a faith and not a profession, enthusiastic, convinced people, to whom the sight of a masterpiece is enough to give fever, and whose loyal heart beats high before all that is beautiful, without asking the name of master and school.

Puccini's fourth opera, La Bohème has become one of the masterpieces of Italian opera. The composer depicts the Paris of the 1830s in an impressionistic way. He sets to music, with a certain nostalgia, his own memories of life as a student at the Conservatory, and tells the love story of two couples, one tragic, the another whimsical.
