Zwischen großer Oper, Chorsinfonie und Oratorium schuf Hector Berlioz mit der 1846 uraufgeführten „légende dramatique“ eine ganz eigene „Faust“-Adaption: Er greift einzelne Episoden aus der allbekannten Handlung heraus und zeigt Faust als romantisch-melancholische, von Einsamkeit und „ennui“ ergriffene Figur. Faust ist des Lebens überdrüssig, fühlt sich der Welt und Gesellschaft entfremdet – da verspricht ihm Méphistophélès die Erfüllung all seiner Wünsche. Er führt ihn in Auerbachs Keller und weckt Fausts Verlangen nach der jungen Marguerite, die sich hoffnungslos in ihn verliebt. Sie tötet aus Liebe zu ihm ihre Mutter und wird zum Tode verurteilt. Faust versucht, sie zu retten …


Mit charaktervollen Solonummern und großen Chorszenen zeigt sich Hector Berlioz einmal mehr als Meister der orchestralen Klangfarben und der musikalischen Suggestion – seien es die Naturbilder, Fausts Höllenritt oder Marguerites himmlische Apotheose. In dem besonderen Ambiente der Morizkirche inszeniert der junge Regisseur Neil Barry Moss, der bereits mit großem Erfolg „Das Rheingold“ auf dem Parkdeck in Berlin in Szene setzte, das Stück als Spiel zwischen Gott und Teufel um Fausts Seele. Faust, Marguerite und ihr Mann Brander werden wie Schachfiguren gelenkt und suchen ihren Weg zwischen Verdammnis und Erlösung.

With solo numbers full of character and large choral scenes, Hector Berlioz once again shows himself to be a master of orchestral timbres and musical suggestion - be it the images of nature, Faust's ride into hell or Marguerite's heavenly apotheosis. In the special ambience of the Morizkirche, the young director Neil Barry Moss, who has already staged "Das Rheingold" with great success on the parking deck in Berlin, stages the play as a game between God and the devil for Faust's soul. Faust, Marguerite and her husband Brander are guided like chess pieces and seek their way between damnation and redemption.
