Verdi's opera The Force of Destiny, written by the composer especially for St. Petersburg, is performed at the Mariinsky in the most authentic form - in the first version and in the scenery created for the 1862 premiere. No, of course, the current scenery - picturesque backdrops and backstage, costumes and props - were already made in our time, but according to the sketches of Andreas Roller, the famous theater artist of the 19th century, who prepared the first production. Ten paintings invented by Roller - Gothic interiors of family castles, gloomy rocky landscapes, architectural fantasies on the themes of medieval monasteries - were highly appreciated by Verdi himself. He even considered using Roller's set for a production of The Force of Destiny at Covent Garden.

To clearly retell the plot of the twenty-second of Verdi's twenty-six operas is not an easy task. It has blood, and love, and the drama of social inequality. The main character, the Spanish aristocrat Leonora, is in love with Alvaro, a descendant of the Peruvian Indians. The offended brother of Leonora Carlos tries to take revenge on them all four acts. Even contemporaries, accustomed to intricate romantic librettos with high lethality, considered it "magnificent nonsense" and "a Spanish parody of drama" (Alexander Serov). But let's not miss the definition of "gorgeous". It certainly applies to music. Verdi wrote for the Italian troupe, the best European singers of his time, engaged by the Russian Directorate of the Imperial Theaters. He made the highest demands on the votes of his compatriots, without any allowance for local frosts. In The Force of Destiny, every vocal number is a masterpiece. What to give preference? The romance of the unfortunate Leonora with an expressive cello solo, her aria in front of the monastery, or the famous "melody" in the last picture? The ballad of Carlos, his aria with a virtuoso cabaletta, or Alvaro's romance with a rare clarinet solo? The duet of Leonora and Alvaro, the two friendly duetinos of Alvaro and Carlos, or their two big duets - duels? Оперу Верди «Сила судьбы», написанную композитором специально для Петербурга, в Мариинском исполняют в максимально аутентичном виде – в первой редакции и в декорациях, созданных для премьеры 1862 года. Нет, конечно, нынешние декорации – живописные задники и кулисы, костюмы и бутафория – сделаны уже в наше время, но по эскизам Андреаса Роллера, знаменитого театрального художника XIX века, готовившего первую постановку. Десять картин, придуманных Роллером, – готические интерьеры фамильных замков, мрачные скалистые пейзажи, архитектурные фантазии на темы средневековых монастырей – высоко оценил сам Верди. Он даже подумывал, не использовать ли декорации Роллера для постановки «Силы судьбы» в Ковент-Гардене.

Внятно пересказать сюжет двадцать второй из двадцать шести опер Верди – задача не из легких. В нем есть и кровь, и любовь, и драма социального неравенства. Главная героиня, испанская аристократка Леонора, влюблена в Альваро, потомка перуанских индейцев. Оскорбленный брат Леоноры Карлос все четыре акта пытается им отомстить. Даже современники, привыкшие к запутанным романтическим либретто с высокой летальностью, считали его «великолепной чепухой» и «испанской пародией на драму» (Александр Серов). Но не пропустим определение «великолепная». Оно, безусловно, относится к музыке. Верди писал для итальянской труппы, лучших европейских певцов своего времени, ангажированных русской Дирекцией Императорских театров. Он предъявлял к голосам соотечественников самые высокие требования, безо всякой скидки на местные морозы. В «Силе судьбы» что ни вокальный номер, то шедевр. Чему отдать предпочтение? Романсу несчастной Леоноры с выразительным соло виолончели, ее арии перед монастырем или знаменитой «мелодии» в последней картине? Балладе Карлоса, его арии с виртуозной кабалеттой или же романсу Альваро с редкостным соло кларнета? Дуэту Леоноры с Альваро, двум дружеским дуэттино Альваро и Карлоса или их двум большим дуэтам – дуэлям? Как удачно распорядилась судьба, что Петербургу понадобилась своя собственная опера Верди!
