Discover the fabulous new production of Offenbach’s La Périchole at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, staged by Valérie Lesort, with conductor Julien Leroy leading the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and a stellar cast featuring the incredible Stéphanie d’Oustrac in the title role!


La Périchole is amongst the most brilliant scores of the “Mozart of the Champs-Élysées”, narrating the absurd history of the eponymous protagonist and her lover Piquillo, who are street singers living in an imaginary 18th-century Peruvian monarchy. The Viceroy of Peru goes outside in disguise to watch over his subjects, but also to entertain himself with a potential female conquest…he falls under the spell of La Périchole—who is deeply in love with Piquillo—but who is at the end of her tether…economically! The lighthearted nature of the work is beautifully highlighted in Valérie Lesort’s production, with whimsical costumes and dazzling décor which harmonize perfectly with the work’s memorable melodies and the surrealist actions of the libretto.

The romantic century is fascinated by courtesans. Offenbach borrows one from Mérimée who himself drew his inspiration from Peruvian history. The political onslaught turns into mockery, while the title role remarkably depicts a woman and the inalienable freedom of arts. Although this bittersweet comedy first disappointed comic opera lovers back in 1868, Hortense Schneider’s 1874 version received critical acclaim.

Stéphanie d’Oustrace will embody Valérie Lesort’s tipsy Perichole in this colourful and whimsical stage direction. She will be surrounded with cheerful sidekicks, all under Julien Leroy’s warm and precise musical direction.
