The opera La Traviata premiered on 6 March 1853 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. For the first time, Verdi turned not to the romantic events of the past, but to a modern and at that time scandalous plot. For a long time, censorship prevented the incredibly popular novel by Alexandre Dumas the son from being staged on the dramatic stage. The premiere of "Ladies of the Camellias" took place only in 1852. According to Verdi's publisher and friend Leon Escudier, "Verdi once attended a performance of Ladies of the Camellias, the plot struck him, and he felt the thrill of the strings of his lyre."

The opera was not awaited by the warmest audience. However, the "failed" opera was well received by the press. For example, a critic of the Musical Italia newspaper wrote: “At the performance of this opera, we felt as if we were at the performance of Dumas's own drama - so much so that it did not seem like music. <...> From now on, Verdi's operas will go to the opera house in the same way as to the drama theater. "

A year later, La Traviata, also shown at the Venetian Theater - San Benedetto - in more customary 18th century costumes, was received with great enthusiasm by the public, after which it began its triumphant march through opera houses all over the world.

Today, La Traviata by G. Verdi is one of the most performed operas on Earth. For example, in the 2019–20 season, 371 performances of this opera took place in 164 productions! Now it is difficult to believe that the opera, without which it is impossible to imagine the history of musical theater, without the performance of fragments of which not a single gala concert is complete, was not understood and accepted at the premiere.

At the Bolshoi Theater, La Traviata was staged for the first time in 1858 - and since then it has been shown over one and a half thousand times. Not all productions left a bright directorial mark in the history of the theater, however, outstanding stage designers have always worked on this opera: Pyotr Williams, Boris Erdman, Vadim Ryndin, Sergei Barkhin. The performances were conducted by Vasily Nebolsin and Alexander Melik-Pashaev, Kirill Kondrashin and Boris Khaikin, Mark Ermler and Yuri Simonov, Fuat Mansurov and Alexander Lazarev, and Antonina Nezhdanova, Elena Katulskaya and Valeria Barsova, Elizaveta Shumskaya and Irina Maslenikov , Bela Rudenko, Irina Zhurina and Marina Meshcheryakova, Albina Shagimuratova, Venera Gimadieva and many other famous singers.

In 2012, in the first season of the historic theater building after a large-scale reconstruction, the famous opera director Francesca Zambello presented her version of La Traviata, who had already staged G. Puccini's Turandot and S. Prokofiev's Fiery Angel at the Bolshoi.

“La Traviata is undoubtedly one of the greatest operas ever written and one of the most important works of the so-called“ middle period ”in Verdi's work. For the first time, the composer took as the basis of an opera a modern, popular book that shocked society, and not a myth or, say, a play by Shakespeare. It was a real revolution, a real shock for the audience: an opera that tells about real people living at the present time, with real problems, about the love of an experienced woman and a very young young man, who, moreover, came from different social strata, about the incurable illness. In addition, La Traviata is not one of those works in which love conquers everything, ”- this is how Francesca Zambello formulated her vision of this opera, starting work on the production.
