Despite the fact that today La traviata occupies a place among the most popular operas and is synonymous with fireworks of beautiful melodies "that go to the ear", the conservative audience of the Venetian Teatro Fenice booed the christening performance in 1853. It was only a performance a year later in the smaller theater of San Benedetto that brought her success. La traviata is one of those operatic masterpieces that were created in one fell swoop, as the composer set it to music in a month and a half in unbroken creative rapture. The libretto was written by the poet Francesco Maria Piave and is an excellent adaptation of The Lady with the Camellias by the French writer Alexandre Dumas. Verdi put on the stage the failed Parisian courtesan Violetta, who is taken over by pure and selfless love. Violetta is the archetype of a woman whose freedom is limited only by love. Traviata was first staged here in 1867 by a German acting ensemble at the Provincial Theater in Ljubljana. This time's staging (15th in a row) is the work of established director Lutz Hochstraate. Together with his creative team, he put on the Ljubljana stage a well-known love story, a drama of great emotions, which he based mainly on the psychological deepening of the characters, on their intimate pain and on the criticism of social conditions. Kljub temu da La traviata danes zavzema mesto med najbolj priljubljenimi operami in je sinonim za ognjemet čudovitih melodij, »ki gredo v uho«, je konservativno občinstvo beneškega Teatra Fenice krstno uprizoritev leta 1853 izžvižgalo. Uspeh ji je prinesla šele uprizoritev leto pozneje v manjšem gledališču San Benedetto. La traviata spada med tiste operne mojstrovine, ki so nastale v enem zamahu, saj jo je skladatelj v nepretrganem ustvarjalnem zanosu uglasbil v mesecu in pol. Libreto je napisal pesnik Francesco Maria Piave in je odlična priredba Dame s kamelijami francoskega pisatelja Alexandra Dumasa. Verdi je na oder postavil propadlo pariško kurtizano Violetto, ki jo prevzema čista in nesebična ljubezen. Violetta je arhetip ženske, ki ji meje svobode postavlja le ljubezen. Traviata je bila pri nas prvič uprizorjena leta 1867 v izvedbi nemškega igralskega ansambla v Deželnem gledališču v Ljubljani. Tokratna postavitev (15. po vrsti) je delo uveljavljenega režiserja Lutza Hochstraateja. Skupaj s svojo ustvarjalno ekipo je na ljubljanski oder postavil znano ljubezensko zgodbo, dramo velikih čustev, ki jo je naslonil predvsem na psihološko poglabljanje likov, na njihovo intimno bolečino in na kritiko družbenih razmer. Ustvarjalci so zgodbo obdržali v zgodovinskem okviru, a ji vseeno pustili dovolj svobode, da je razvila živo in pristno odrsko dogajanje.
