The story of a great love

One of the most sung operas in the world - as it has been since Verdi's time, when all musical institutions had it in their repertoire - "La Traviata" was composed shortly after Verdi saw Paris, between 1851 and 1853, the play adapted from Alexandre Dumas-son's novel, The Lady with the Camellias. The real story of the courtesan Marie Duplessis - who loved to the point of sacrifice and died at only 23 years old with tuberculosis - therefore impressed not only the French writer, who gave life to the courtesan in his novel, but also Verdi, who brought her to life in "La Traviata".

The fact that Verdi staged the story of a woman of easy morals created countless inconveniences for him, the censorship of the era forcing him, for example, repeatedly to change some fragments of the libretto (the composer refused each time). The moment of the premiere on March 6, 1853, at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, was not an encouraging one for the composer, the performance proving to be a fiasco which was mainly caused by the fact that the only professional performer in the cast was Fanny Salvini-Donatelli.

However, "La Traviata" would definitely conquer the public with the second performance, which took place the same year at Teatro San Benedetto, in Venice. Since then, the woman in Verdi's work, who lives a glittering life, but is marked by immorality, financial insecurity and the inability to ever marry, has fascinated centuries by her courage, passion and power of sacrifice.

Una dintre cele mai cântate opere din lume – așa cum era încă de pe vremea lui Verdi, când mai toate instituțiile muzicale o aveau în repertoriu – „La Traviata” a fost compusă la puțin timp după ce Verdi a văzut la Paris, între 1851 și 1853, piesa de teatru adaptată după romanul lui Alexandre Dumas-fiul, „Dama cu camelii”. Povestea reală a curtezanei Marie Duplessis – care a iubit până la sacrificiu și a murit la doar 23 de ani bolnavă de tuberculoză – l-a impresionat așadar nu doar pe scriitorul francez, care i-a dat viață curtezanei în romanul său, ci și pe Verdi, care a însuflețit-o în „La Traviata”.

Faptul că Verdi a pus în scenă povestea unei femei de moravuri ușoare i-a creat nenumărate neplăceri, cenzura epocii impunându-i, spre exemplu, în repetate rânduri, să schimbe din libret unele fragmente (compozitorul a refuzat de fiecare dată). Nici momentul premierei din 6 martie 1853, de la Teatro La Fenice din Veneția, nu a fost unul încurajator pentru compozitor, reprezentația dovedindu-se a fi un fiasco ce a fost, în principal, cauzat de faptul că singurul interpret de profesie din distribuție era Fanny Salvini-Donatelli.

Cu toate acestea, „La Traviata” avea să cucerească definitiv publicul odată cu cea de-a doua reprezentație, ce a avut loc în același an la Teatro San Benedetto, din Veneția. De atunci, femeia din opera lui Verdi, ce trăiește o viață sclipitoare, dar pusă sub semnul imoralității, al nesiguranței financiare și al neputinței de a se căsători vreodată a fascinat secole de-a rândul prin curajul, pasiunea și puterea sa de sacrificiu.
