Уже в перші роки своєї творчості Дж.Верді (1813-1901 рр.) накреслив нові шляхи розвитку оперного мистецтва, яке, попри значні імена, на той час опинилося у творчому застої. Ранні твори молодого композитора позначаються ясністю задуму, сценічністю, простотою й виразністю музичної мови, невіддільної від італійського народного мелосу. Постановки «Макбету» та «Луїзи Міллер», на думку музикознавців, започаткували ще незнаний для європейської сцени жанр психологічної музичної драми. З'явився автор, який побачив героя опери у «плоті і крові», не ходульний історичний персонаж, а насамперед живу людину, сповнену переживань, прагнень, внутрішніх протиріч. У творах Дж.Верді кожна життєва й історична ситуація трансформувалася у яскравий і виразний музичний образ, що значною мірою окреслило творчу стилістику молодого митця, виділило його ім'я серед тогочасних італійських композиторів. Стало очевидним, що на європейському музичному видноколі з'явився справді талановитий митець. Ті, хто передбачав Дж.Верді велике майбутнє, не помилилися. Кожним своїм новим твором композитор підтверджував свій виключний статус на музичному Олімпі другої половини XIX ст.

Дж.Верді вбачав смисл і цінність твору не тільки в музичній досконалості, театральності, а й у соціальній значимості. Не випадково, біля імені Дж.Верді уже в 50-х роках з'явилося визначення «композитор-громадянин». Він не тільки своєю творчістю збагачував духовний світ своїх сучасників, але й надихав їх на боротьбу. Згадаймо «Набукко» — відверто революційну, соціально гостру оперу. Дж.Верді, може, як жодний інший композитор того часу, вмів осучаснювати історичну подію, історичні персонажі наділяти рисами героїв свого часу, скажімо, Джузеппе Гарибальді. Ось чому відхід від героїчної тематики до «життєвих проблем», від зображення значних історичних подій — до відтворення почуттів звичайних людей, викликало шок у багатьох шанувальників Дж. Верді. Проте, для самого композитора така зміна творчої площини не була випадковістю, а осмисленим вибором нової тематики. Його, як людину і митця, хвилювала проблема соціальної нерівності, зневаги особистості, що визначало ідейну спрямованість вердіївських творів п'ятдесятих років, зокрема опер «Ріголетто», «Трубадур», та «Травіата». У цих, може найпопулярніших операх італійського композитора, герої борються, страждають і, врешті, гинуть у конфлікті саме із соціальним середовищем. Притаманний цим операм мелодраматизм, характерний всьому тогочасному мистецтву, у творчості Дж.Верді поєднався із гострою правдою життя, особливо у «Травіаті», над якою Дж.Верді розпочав працювати невдовзі після появи роману А.Дюма-сина «Дама з камеліями», який викликав сенсацію у паризькому літературному світі.

Лібрето до «Травіати» писав, за безпосередньою участю композитора, Франческо Піаве. «Травіата» була першою оперою Дж.Верді, де майже відсутня драматургічна інтрига. Із лібрето було вилучено всі лінії роману, що хоч якось заважали зосередити увагу на душевному світі Віолетти та її трагічній долі.

До речі, героїня твору А.Дюма-сина «Дама з камеліями», не вигадана особа. Прототипом Маргарити Готьє стала широко відома у Парижі сорокових років Марі Дюплессі, яку автор роману та п'єси знав особисто. Дочка бідних нормандських селян, вона рано втратила матір і змушена була покинути рідний дім, щоб заробляти гроші. Дівчина опинилася у Парижі. Небуденна врода Марі приваблює багатих «покровителів». Молода жінка стає однією із зірок паризького світського товариства. Її природний розум, дотепність і чарівність захоплювали сучасників, зокрема композитора Ф.Ліста та поета Т.Готьє ...

А.Дюма-син також захоплювався непідробною чарівністю юної нормандки і переживав глибоке потрясіння, коли, повернувшись із тривалої подорожі, довідався про її передчасну смерть. Письменник вирішив розповісти про романтичну, сповнену поезії та шляхетності любов Марі Дюплессі, рисами якої письменник наділив героїню свого роману.

Дуже мало відомостей про роботу композитора над оперою «Травіата». Дж.Верді не підійшов перший варіант лібретто, яке на його вимогу Франческо Піаве значно скоротив, спростивши драматургічні лінії стосовно самої п'єси. Дж.Верді наполяг зберегти тільки основу сюжету А.Дюма — драму Віолетти (Маргарити Готьє) та Альфреда Жермона (Армана Дювале). Прем'єра опери відбулася у Венеції на сцені театру La Fenice 6 березня 1853 року.

Для вимогливої італійської публіки не існувало ні композиторів-кумирів, ні співаків-кумирів. Успіх завжди залежав від вартості та сценічного втілення опери. Незважаючи на всі старання композитора та постановників, прем'єра «Травіати» провалилася. Щонайперше з вини виконавців, які не зуміли «вжитися» у камерно-інтимну оперу із сучасного життя. Ще однією причиною невдачі «Травіати» музикознавці вважають «невчасність» вибору Дж.Верді теми. Для публіки, вихованої на історико-костюмованих операх, було незвичним бачити на сцені головною дійовою особою сучасницю, до того ж жінку, відкинуту своїм середовищем. Віолетта у музиці, як Анна Кареніна у літературі: їхня мораль залишилась чужою у світі тогочасних етичних критеріїв. Особливо нищівного удару прем'єрі нанесло те, що на партію Віолетти було запрошено співачку Сальвіні-Донателлі з прекрасним голосом, але досить могутньої комплекції, що не вельми відповідало сюжету про жінку, яка помирає від сухот.

Незважаючи на провал першої постановки «Травіати» у Венеції, Дж.Верді й на мить не сумнівався, що з часом цей твір зрозуміють і сприймуть. Через рік опера була поновлена режисером Антоніо Галло у театрі San Benedetto. Правда, враховуючи смаки публіки, вирішили акторів одягнути в історичні костюми. Ця постановка, власне, й започаткувала небуденну сценічну історію «Травіати», яка обійшла оперні сцени всього світу, і є зараз, мабуть, чи не найрепертуарнішим твором вердіївської спадщини.

Музика «Травіати» прозвучала як суворе звинувачення фальшивій моралі, яка привела до трагічної розв'язки життя ніжної і прекрасної своїм почуттям і пориванням жінки. Композитор створив виразний портрет, виписаний, говорячи мовою живописців, «напівтонами». У листі французькому музичному письменнику і театральному діячу Леону Ескюдьє Дж.Верді писав, що опера матиме успіх, якщо «оркестр раз і назавжди втямить, що треба грати ріаnо».

Важливе місце у «Травіаті» посідають танцювальні ритми, зовсім новий елемент тогочасної опери. На фоні вальсу відбувається любовний дует Віолетти й Альфреда в першій дії. Чарівна вальсова мелодія — перша арія Віолетти, танцювальні ритми звучать і у фінальній сцені — передсмертній арії Віолетти та її прощальному дуеті з Альфредом, що уособлює скороминучість життя і радість буття. У мелодійному стилі «Травіати» багато такого, чого не знала європейська оперна музика до появи цього твору.

Заспівом до опери-портрету, її візитною карткою, стає невелика оркестрова прелюдія, яка вводить нас у поетичний світ героїні. Звучать дві лейттеми опери: перша уособлює печальну долю Віолетти, яка прощається із життям, а друга — пристрасне її кохання. Все це знайде свій розвиток у подальшій музиці, сповненої інтимності, гарячих почуттів, драматичності і закоханості «у життя, вино і жінок».

«Травіата» посідає особливе місце у творчості Дж.Верді. Саме вона вплинула на подальший розвиток європейської ліричної опери, зокрема на творчість Ж. Массне, Р. Леонкавалло та Дж. Пуччіні.

Якось, коли «Травіата» вже набула світового визнання, А.Дюма-син сказав: «Через якихось п'ятдесят років ніхто б і не згадав про мою «Даму з камеліями», але Верді зробив її безсмертною ...»

Already in the first years of his work, J. Verdi (1813-1901) outlined new ways of development of opera art, which, despite significant names, at that time found itself in a creative stagnation. The early works of the young composer are characterized by the clarity of the idea, stagecraft, simplicity and expressiveness of the musical language, which is inseparable from the Italian folk melos. Productions of "Macbeth" and "Louisa Miller", according to musicologists, started a genre of psychological musical drama that was still unknown on the European stage. An author appeared who saw the hero of the opera in "flesh and blood", not a stilted historical character, but primarily a living person, full of experiences, aspirations, and internal contradictions. In the works of J. Verdi, every life and historical situation was transformed into a bright and expressive musical image, which largely outlined the creative style of the young artist, distinguished his name I am among the Italian composers of that time. It became obvious that a truly talented artist appeared on the European music scene. Those who predicted a great future for J. Verdi were not mistaken. With each of his new works, the composer confirmed his exceptional status on the musical Olympus of the second half of the 19th century.

J. Verdi saw the meaning and value of the work not only in musical perfection, theatricality, but also in social significance. It is not by chance that the definition of "composer-citizen" appeared next to the name of G. Verdi already in the 50s. He not only enriched the spiritual world of his contemporaries with his creativity, but also inspired them to fight. Let's recall "Nabucco" - a frankly revolutionary, socially acute opera. J. Verdi, perhaps like no other composer of that time, knew how to modernize a historical event, to endow historical characters with the traits of heroes of his time, for example, Giuseppe Garibaldi. That is why the departure from heroic themes to "life problems", from the depiction of significant historical events to the reproduction of the feelings of ordinary people, caused a shock to many fans of G. Verdi. However, for the composer himself, such a change in the creative plane was not an accident, and a meaningful choice of a new topic. As a person and an artist, he was concerned about the problem of social inequality, contempt for the individual, which determined the ideological orientation of Verdi's works of the fifties, in particular the operas "Rigoletto", "Troubadour", and "La Traviata". In these, perhaps the most popular operas of the Italian composer, the heroes struggle, suffer and, in the end, die in conflict with the social environment. The melodramatism inherent in these operas, characteristic of all the art of that time, was combined with the sharp truth of life in G. Verdi's work, especially in "La Traviata", which G. Verdi began working on shortly after the publication of A. Dumas-son's novel "The Lady with the Camellias", which caused a sensation in the Parisian literary world. which determined the ideological direction of Verdi's works of the fifties, in particular the operas "Rigoletto", "Troubadour", and "La Traviata". The libretto for "La Traviata" was written by Francesco Piave, with the direct participation of the composer. "La Traviata" was the first opera by J. Verdi, where there is almost no dramatic intrigue. All the lines of the novel were removed from the libretto, which somehow hindered the focus on Violetta's mental world and her tragic fate.

By the way, the heroine of A. Dumas-son's work "The Lady with Camellias" is not a fictional person. Marie Duplessis, whom the author of the novel and the play knew personally, became widely known in Paris in the forties as the prototype of Marguerite Gauthier. The daughter of poor Norman peasants, she lost her mother at an early age and had to leave her home to earn money. The girl ended up in Paris. Mary's extraordinary beauty attracts rich "patrons". The young woman becomes one of the stars of Parisian society. Her natural mind, wit and charm fascinated contemporaries, in particular the composer F. Liszt and the poet T. Gauthier ...

A. Dumas-son also admired the genuine charm of the young Norman woman and was deeply shocked when, upon returning from a long trip, he learned of her untimely death. The writer decided to tell about the romantic love of Marie Duplessis, full of poetry and nobility, whose features the writer gave to the heroine of his novel.

There is very little information about the composer's work on the opera "La Traviata". J. Verdi did not like the first version of the libretto, which, at his request, Francesco Piave significantly shortened, simplifying the dramaturgical lines of the play itself. J. Verdi insisted on keeping only the basis of A. Dumas' plot - the drama of Violetta (Marguerite Gauthier) and Alfred Germont (Armand Duval). The premiere of the opera took place in Venice on the stage of the La Fenice theater on March 6, 1853.

There were no idol composers or idol singers for the demanding Italian public. Success has always depended on the cost and staging of the opera. Despite all the efforts of the composer and directors, the premiere of "La Traviata" failed. First of all, it is the fault of the performers, who failed to "get used" to the chamber-intimate opera from modern life. Another reason for the failure of "La Traviata" is considered by musicologists to be the "timelessness" of Verdi's choice of theme. For the public, brought up on historical-costume operas, it was unusual to see a contemporary woman as the main protagonist on the stage, moreover, a woman rejected by her environment. Violetta in music, like Anna Karenina in literature: their morality remained alien in the world of contemporary ethical criteria. The premier was dealt a particularly devastating blow by

Despite the failure of the first production of "La Traviata" in Venice, G. Verdi did not doubt for a moment that over time this work would be understood and accepted. A year later, the opera was revived by director Antonio Gallo at the Teatro San Benedetto. True, taking into account the tastes of the public, they decided to dress the actors in historical costumes. This production, in fact, started the extraordinary stage story of "La Traviata", which went around opera stages all over the world, and is now probably the most repertory work of Verdi's heritage.

The music of "La Traviata" sounded like a harsh accusation of false morality, which led to a tragic outcome of the life of a gentle and beautiful woman with her feelings and impulses. The composer created an expressive portrait, written out, speaking in the language of painters, in "halftones". In a letter to the French musical writer and theater actor Leon Escudier, J. Verdi wrote that the opera will be successful if "the orchestra learns once and for all that it is necessary to play the riano."

An important place in "La Traviata" is occupied by dance rhythms, a completely new element of opera at that time. The love duet of Violetta and Alfred in the first act takes place against the background of the waltz. A charming waltz melody is Violetta's first aria, dance rhythms also sound in the final scene - Violetta's dying aria and her farewell duet with Alfred, which personifies the transience of life and the joy of being. In the melodic style of "La Traviata" there is much that European opera music did not know before the appearance of this work.

The chorus to the opera-portrait, its hallmark, is a small orchestral prelude that introduces us to the poetic world of the heroine. There are two leitthemes of the opera: the first represents the sad fate of Violetta, who says goodbye to life, and the second represents her passionate love. All this will find its development in further music, full of intimacy, hot feelings, drama and falling in love "with life, wine and women".

"La Traviata" occupies a special place in G. Verdi's work. It was she who influenced the further development of European lyric opera, in particular, the work of J. Massenet, R. Leoncavallo and G. Puccini.

Once, when "La Traviata" had already gained world recognition, A. Dumas-son said: "After some fifty years, no one would have remembered my "Lady with Camellias", but Verdi made it immortal..."
