Violetta Valéry and Alfredo Germont meet and fall in love at a big party. A love that has no place in this world. She is a famous Parisian courtesan, he comes from a respected family. Love is a consumer good and has its price. Violetta pays for this with her renunciation of love. She gives in to Alfredo's father's urging and leaves him immediately.

Sie ist eine berühmte Pariser Kurtisane, er stammt aus einer angesehenen Familie. Die Liebe ist ein Konsumgut und hat ihren Preis. Violetta zahlt diesen mit ihrem Liebesverzicht und schließlich mit ihrem Leben. In Verdis flirrend schönen wie tragischen Oper steckt Violettas Stigmatisierung schon im Titel: Sie ist „La traviata“ („die vom rechten Wege Abgekommene“). Sie ist eine Ikone und zugleich Geächtete, anbetungswürdig und umstritten – steht zwischen prallem Leben und einsamem Tod.
