John Milton's eloquent verse epic “Paradise Lost” from 1667 tells of the fall of the angels into hell, of Satan's rebellion against God's order, of how sin came into the world, and of the temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the garden of eden.
In his text, Milton refers to various biblical sources from both the Old and the New Testament, but he also takes up motifs from ancient texts such as Homer and Virgil.
In its time the work was read as a parable of the English civil war in the middle of the 17th century, in later epochs one saw and still see a representation of the moral dilemma of man, being able to differentiate between good and bad. Artists of all branches and directions have been inspired by Milton's text again and again up to the present day.
After the rock oratorio “Ludus Danieli” (2008) and the rock mystery “Everyman” (“Jedermann”; 2015), the Vanden Plas musicians Günter Werno, Andy Kuntz and Stephan Lill, together with Johannes Reitmeier, are once again bringing a great stage work in the style of a medieval morality play as a rock opera for the world premiere.
The hymnically opulent sound of Germany's leading ProgMetal band “Vanden Plas” seems almost predestined to capture Milton's epic with its powerful images between heaven, paradise and hell in music.
The title “The Last Paradise Lost” builds a bridge to today:
Humanity currently has perhaps the last chance to preserve creation.
