The Tyrolean cousins Frantz and Grittly wander the roads of Württemberg as travelling musicians and imagine what they would be able to buy themselves if the lottery ticket they have in their pockets turned out to be a winner. The dream becomes reality with the appearance of the pedlar Berthold, who knows the result of the draw. The number 66 will bring its holder 100,000 florins: this is precisely the number Frantz thinks he has. But, rather than use this unexpected windfall to help Grittly and his recently widowed sister, Frantz borrows the money and goes into town to squander it. The exhilaration of wealth gives way to despair when he realises that he had read his number upside down: his ticket is 99... The moral – money does not bring happiness – greatly appealed to the bourgeois public of the Champs-Élysées. The press saw the work as above all a show of strength on Offenbach’s part, in which he displayed his compositional talents. Here he openly declared his allegiance to the tradition of French opéra-comique and presented numbers that became hits right from the premiere. François Bernard’s new arrangement for piano, clarinet and trombone and Victoria Duhamel’s participative staging will bring out all the finesse and the parodic dimension of this one-act operetta.

I due cugini tirolesi Frantz e Grittly, musicisti ambulanti, girano per le strade del Württemberg pensando a tutto ciò che potrebbero permettersi se il biglietto della lotteria che hanno in tasca risultasse vincente. Il sogno sembra avverarsi quando appare il venditore ambulante Berthold, che conosce l’esito della lotteria. Il numero 66 fa guadagnare al vincitore centomila fiorini: ed è proprio quello che Frantz pensa di possedere. Invece utilizzare la vincita insperata per aiutare Grittly e sua sorella, da poco rimasta vedova, Frantz si fa prestare l’equivalente della somma e va in città a dilapidarla. L’ebbrezza dovuta all’improvvisa ricchezza lascia il posto alla disperazione quando si rende conto di aver letto il numero alla rovescia: il suo biglietto è il 99… La morale ­– il denaro non fa la felicità – piacque moltissimo al pubblico borghese degli Champs-Élysées. Alla stampa l’opera parve soprattutto una dimostrazione di forza da parte di un Offenbach deciso a esibire il proprio talento di compositore: vuole chiaramente inserirsi nella tradizione dell’opéra-comique francese e propone brani che fanno centro sin dalla prima rappresentazione. L’arrangiamento originale di François Bernard per pianoforte, clarinetto e trombone e la partecipe regia di Victoria Duhamel metteranno in luce tutta la finezza e la dimensione parodistica di questa operetta in un atto.

Cette rêverie bascule dans le réel alors qu'apparaît le colporteur Berthold qui connaît le résultat du tirage. Le numéro 66 permet au vainqueur de remporter 100 000 florins : c'est justement celui que Frantz pense posséder. Plutôt que d'utiliser ce gain inespéré pour venir en aide à Grittly et à sa sœur récemment veuve, Frantz emprunte la somme et part en ville pour la dilapider. L'ivresse de la richesse fait place au désespoir quand il se rend compte qu'il avait lu son numéro à l'envers : son billet est le 99... La morale – l'argent ne fait pas le bonheur – séduit énormément le public bourgeois des Champs-Élysées. Pour la presse, l'ouvrage semble surtout une démonstration de force d'un Offenbach exhibant ses talents de compositeur. Il s'y réclame ouvertement de la tradition de l'opéra-comique français et propose des morceaux qui font mouche dès la première. L'arrangement original de François Bernard pour piano, clarinette et trombone et la mise en scène participative de Victoria Duhamel mettront en lumière toute la finesse et la dimension parodique de cette opérette en un acte.
