All the noble knights of France are engaged in crusades. All except Count Ory and his merry cronies, who travel the Touraine in search of gallant adventures, good wine and good food. Boccaccio's plot, with a high erotic and alcoholic content, is treated by Rossini with spirit, wit and lightness, up to the ambiguous malice of darkness in which, in the same bed, we find Ory disguised as a nun, his page Isolier in the role of Comtesse Adéle and Adéle herself, the object of desire of the two men and in love with the second. This is the first opera written directly in French by Rossini (1828) after the reworkings of previous works ( Le siège de Corinthe / Maometto II , Moïse et Pharaon / Mosé in Egitto), subjects as serious as the next and last, Guillaume Tell . About half of the music comes from Viaggio a Reims , a second-hand opera that Rossini knew was destined to disappear from the stage, but it also seems to have been created for Le comte Ory , paradoxical and sophisticated.

Tutti i nobili cavalieri di Francia sono impegnati nelle crociate. Tutti tranne il conte Ory e i suoi allegri compari, che percorrono la Touraine a caccia di avventure galanti, buon vino e buona tavola. La trama boccaccesca, ad alto tasso erotico e alcolico, è trattata da Rossini con spirito, arguzia e leggerezza, fino all’ambigua malizia dell’oscurità in cui, nello stesso letto, troviamo Ory travestito da suora, il suo paggio Isolier nei panni della Comtesse Adéle e la stessa Adéle, oggetto del desiderio dei due uomini e innamorata del secondo. Ecco la prima opera scritta direttamente in francese da Rossini (1828) dopo le rielaborazioni di precedenti lavori (Le siège de Corinthe / Maometto II, Moïse et Pharaon / Mosé in Egitto), soggetti serissimi quanto il successivo e ultimo, Guillaume Tell. La musica proviene per circa la metà dal Viaggio a Reims, opera d’occasione che Rossini sapeva destinata a sparire dalle scene, ma pare nata anche per Le comte Ory, paradossale e sofisticato.
