Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte's collaboration is one of the great strokes of luck in cultural history. They chose Beaumarchais' comedy The Marriage of Figaro as the basis for their first opera together , the centerpiece of a drama trilogy that had become a scandal in France. Therefore, while they concealed the revolutionary explosive force of the material, they delved all the more deeply into the inner life of the characters and gave the gender relations a meaning that went far beyond the original. Two plot lines intersect: Count Almaviva's attempt to make his lover Susanna, the fiancée of his valet Figaro, and the Countess' efforts to win back the love of her unfaithful husband. Could himself Le nozze di Figaroafter its premiere at the old Burgtheater in Vienna in 1786, the work is undoubtedly one of the most frequently performed operas in the world today.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts und Lorenzo Da Pontes Zusammenarbeit gehört zu den ganz großen Glücksfällen der Kulturgeschichte. Als Vorlage für ihre erste gemeinsame Oper wählten sie Beaumarchais’ Komödie Die Hochzeit des Figaro, das Mittelstück einer Dramen-Trilogie, die in Frankreich zu einem Skandalwerk geworden war. Daher kaschierten sie zwar die revolutionäre Sprengkraft des Stoffes, tauchten dafür aber umso tiefer in das Seelenleben der Figuren ein und verliehen den Geschlechterbeziehungen eine über die Vorlage weit hinausgehende Bedeutung. Zwei Handlungsstränge überkreuzen sich: Graf Almavivas Versuch, Susanna, die Verlobte seines Kammerdieners Figaro, zur Geliebten zu machen, und das Bemühen der Gräfin, die Liebe ihres ungetreuen Gatten zurückzugewinnen. Konnte sich Le nozze di Figaro nach der Uraufführung am alten Wiener Burgtheater 1786 nicht lange halten, so gehört das Werk heute zweifellos zu den weltweit am häufigsten aufgeführten Opern überhaupt.
