Not knowing at all who you are or what you are doing is not just the declared state of being or being outside of yourself by Cherubino, perhaps the most dazzling opera figure of all, but it applies to all the characters in Mozart and Da Pontes Opera buffa. At least temporarily. And whether the "great day", on which the wedding of Susanna and Figaro is first celebrated, then not celebrated again, but finally and finally celebrated despite or perhaps because of various fundamental insights and confusions, is a happy day, is a question of whether certainly not say. In her staging, Christiane Pohle focuses on the standardized promises of happiness of civil marriage and searches for the utopian potential of love - whatever it may be.
