Le Mariage de Figaro contrarie Louis XVI, c’est compréhensible : le monde qui vient, celui des valets, y questionne un peu trop vigoureusement le monde des maîtres dont le pouvoir vacille.
Beaumarchais ronge son frein trois ans avant de voir la création de sa pièce en 1784. C’est un triomphe européen.
Mozart, enthousiaste, propose à Lorenzo Da Ponte d’en faire un opéra. C’est leur première collaboration. L’Empereur exige quelques coupures. À la création le 1er mai 1786, la noblesse locale est mitigée, l’œuvre triomphe partout ailleurs.
Olivier Assayas, cinéaste amoureux de la musique, souligne « la vertigineuse humanité dont irradie la musique de Mozart, que la grâce ne quitte pas un instant. » Il voit dans l’œuvre la fin d’un monde dépassé, submergé et rendu à l’état sauvage par la poussée de la nature, destruction nécessaire et promesse d’avenir d’un monde nouveau. Ce sera sa première mise en scène d’opéra.

This will be his first opera production.
