The subject of Le Pauvre Matelot is simple: a woman has had no news for several years of her husband, who is a sailor. Despite her father-in-law's insistence, she refuses to remarry.

The husband returns unexpectedly, he goes first of all to a neighbor who informs him of the virtuous attitude of his wife and of her misery; the husband wants "to see his happiness from the outside".
He passes himself off to his wife as a friend of her husband, tells her that the unfortunate man is still a prisoner, that he is ill and without money, he confides to her that he has had better luck and that he is very rich and asks her to spend the night at her house.

She accepts and then kills him in order to "save her husband".

The curtain falls before she can realize her mistake and her crime.
