Rond Jean Cocteau en Eric Satie ontstond de ‘Groupe de Six’ (1918-1920), die een aantal grote namen uit het Franse culturele verbond. Zij verwierpen zowel het Wagneriaanse pathos als het impressionisme van Debussy om door middel van nieuwe ideeën en technieken tot een pure muzikale expressie te komen. 
Poulencs La voix humaine (1959), een sober monodrama naar het gelijknamige toneelstuk van Cocteau, toont ons het laatste wanhopige telefoongesprek van twee geliefden. 
Met Le pauvre matelot (1927) slaagden Cocteau en Milhaud erin om een eenvoudig fait divers om te vormen tot ontroerend lyrisch theater dat alledaagsheid en poëzie vermengt met volksmelodieën en zeemansliederen.

The 'Groupe de Six' (1918-1920) was formed around Jean Cocteau and Eric Satie, which brought together a number of big names from the French cultural association. They rejected both the Wagnerian pathos and the impressionism of Debussy in order to arrive at a pure musical expression through new ideas and techniques. 
Poulenc's La voix humaine (1959), a sober monodrama based on Cocteau's play of the same name, shows us the last desperate telephone conversation between two lovers. 
With Le pauvre matelot (1927), Cocteau and Milhaud succeeded in transforming a simple fait diverse into a moving lyrical theater that mixes everydayness and poetry with folk melodies and sea shanties.
