L’Élixir d’amour s’inspire d’un livret d’Eugène Scribe magnifiquement réécrit par Felice Romani. L’intrigue, en deux actes, met en scène Nemorino, un jeune paysan fou amoureux de la belle Adina, une riche et coquette fermière. 
Quand Gaetano Donizetti compose L’Élixir d’amour, il a 34 ans et en est déjà à son 37e opéra (en tout il en écrira 71). L’œuvre est composée en un temps record : au prin­temps 1832, Alessandro Lanari, le très réputé im­presario du Teatro della Canobbiana à Milan – rival numéro un de la Scala – a besoin d’un opéra de toute urgence pour compléter sa programmation. C’est Donizetti qui sera choisi pour le com­poser, avec, à ses côtés, son fidèle librettiste depuis dix ans, Felice Romani. Le livret aurait été écrit en seulement une semaine, la musique en à peine deux ! 

Au début de l’œuvre, le public découvre Adina absorbée par l’histoire de Tristan et Iseut et de leur philtre d’amour. Notre pauvre Nemorino n’a pas de chance : Adina le dédaigne et, pour couronner le tout, elle accorde plus d’intérêt au prétentieux sergent Belcore. En écho à cette légende du Moyen Âge, Nemorino va avoir l’idée de se procurer un philtre prétendument magique auprès du charlatan Dulcamara. Après de nombreuses péripéties, Adina tombe enfin amoureuse de Nemorino, par ailleurs, devenu soudainement héritier d’une grande fortune. "Dire quel morceau est le plus beau serait une tâche bien difficile", peut-on lire dans La Gazzetta di Milano au lendemain de la création de L’Élixir d’amour, le 12 mai 1832, au Teatro de la Canobbiana.

The Elixir of Love is inspired by a libretto by Eugène Scribe beautifully rewritten by Felice Romani. The plot, in two acts, features Nemorino, a young peasant madly in love with the beautiful Adina, a rich and flirtatious farmer. 

When Gaetano Donizetti composed The Elixir of Love , he was 34 years old and had already written his 37th opera (in all he would write 71). The work was composed in record time: in the spring of 1832, Alessandro Lanari, the very famous impresario of the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan – La Scala's number one rival – urgently needed an opera to complete his programme. It is Donizetti who will be chosen to compose it, with, at his side, his faithful librettist for ten years, Felice Romani. The libretto would have been written in just one week, the music in barely two! 



At the start of the work, the public discovers Adina absorbed by the story of Tristan and Iseult and their love potion. Our poor Nemorino is unlucky: Adina disdains him and, to top it off, she pays more attention to the pretentious Sergeant Belcore. Echoing this legend from the Middle Ages, Nemorino will have the idea of ​​obtaining a supposedly magic potion from the charlatan Dulcamara. After many adventures, Adina finally falls in love with Nemorino, who has also suddenly become heir to a great fortune. "To say which piece is the most beautiful would be a very difficult task", we can read in La Gazzetta di Milano the day after the creation of The Elixir of Love, on May 12, 1832, at the Teatro de la Canobbiana.
