Sometimes only a love potion helps, especially when it's one like Tristan and Isolde's. At least Nemorino puts all his hopes in this brew: after all, as a little nobody, he is in love with the adorable Adina, who is more interested in the dashing Belcore. How fortunate that the traveling wonder doctor Dulcamara has such a remedy in his range purely by chance. The miracle elixir, which is of course nothing more than alcohol, immediately shows its effect: with newly won self-confidence, Nemorino rises to become the most sought-after bachelor far and wide - to which the rumor of a considerable inheritance probably contributes significantly. In this way , Nemorino not only manages to outdo his rival , but ultimately also to win Adina's heart.
The very first drop of Gaetano Donizetti's "Love Potion" in 1832 hooked audiences for the sweet, lavish melodies the composer instilled into the play's most famous aria: Nemorino's touching lament "Una furtiva lagrima." Rolando Villazón, who was often enough successful on stage himself as Nemorino, is now staging Donizetti's »Love Potion« at the Leipzig Opera. With a lot of wit and heart, but also a fine feeling for the profundity of the work, he tells the cheerful love adventure as a turbulent western movie.

Manchmal hilft nur noch ein Liebestrank, vor allem wenn es so einer ist wie der von Tristan und Isolde. Zumindest Nemorino setzt all seine Hoffnung in dieses Gebräu: Schließlich ist er als kleiner Niemand in die anbetungswürdige, aber eher am schneidigen Belcore interessierte Adina verliebt. Welch ein Glück, dass der fahrende Wunderdoktor Dulcamara ein solches Mittel rein zufällig in seinem Sortiment führt. Das Wunderelixier, bei dem es sich freilich um nichts anderes als Alkohol handelt, zeigt auch prompt seine Wirkung: Mit frisch gewonnenem Selbstvertrauen steigt Nemorino zum begehrtesten Junggesellen weit und breit auf – wozu das Gerücht einer beträchtlichen Erbschaft wohl nicht unwesentlich beiträgt. So gelingt es Nemorino nicht nur, seinen Nebenbuhler auszustechen, sondern letztlich auch Adinas Herz zu gewinnen.
Schon der erste Tropfen von Gaetano Donizettis »Liebestrank« machte das Publikum 1832 süchtig nach den süßen, verschwenderischen Melodien, die der Komponist auch der berühmtesten Arie des Stückes einträufelte: Nemorinos berührender Klage »Una furtiva lagrima«. Rolando Villazón, der als Nemorino häufig genug selbst erfolgreich auf der Bühne stand, inszeniert Donizettis »Liebestrank« nun an der Oper Leipzig. Mit viel Witz und Herz, aber auch feinem Gespür für den Tiefsinn des Werkes erzählt er das heitere Liebesabenteuer als turbulenten Western-Movie.
