The mechanical doll Olympia sings "Les oiseaux dans la charmille", one of the most difficult coloratura arias ever composed for soprano. As the aria’s nickname "Doll's Song" suggests, Olympia's mechanical gear has to be wound up repeatedly so that she can continue singing.

In Barrie Kosky's bizarrely bizarre production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann, the titular artist loses himself in a disturbing nightmare of his own fantasies. In Hoffmann's exaggerated sensibility, Mozart's Don Giovanni becomes the starting point of a madness-driven journey through bizarre worlds; the idolatrous admiration for the singer of Donna Anna gives birth to ever new images of women: the soulless doll Olympia, the terminally ill singer Antonia, the heartless courtesan Giulietta. Haunted by his own demons, there is no way back to reality for Hoffmann. "Deadly blackness, lurid entertainment balance each other out: a mad, confused Hoffmann spectacle, perfectly served." [FAZ]
